Interesting article. Anyone interested in this train of thought can find more on Tolkien’s Christian vision in a very in-depth book called The Gospel According to Tolkien by Ralph C Wood. Worth reading!
This was a great article! I get the mag and every yr that a LOTR movie comes out (*sniff sniff* no more…) they put a great article like this one!

Ack! It is not a Christian metaphor, it isn’t an allegory of anything, Tolkein said so himself!
Sorry, but this irks me to no end, nitpicking through adn taking out anything which can be construed as “Christian” and calling it a “Christian vision”, while completely ignoring the pagan aspects of the story.
The trees, the grey haven’s, even Gandalf being returned can be found in celtic or Norse mythos, which tolkein studied extensively.
Good vs Evil isn’t exclusive property of Christian theology!
Sorry, but this is an old pet peeve of mine.
Thank you World magazine for another great article! It was World’s article in 1999, naming LOTR as one of the top 100 books of the millenium, that encouraged me to read LOTR in the first place. Since then they have featured LOTR in many of their magazines. Keep up the good work!
