Give the hobbits their Oscar!
An article at CTV.ca discusses the leading contenders for the main Oscar awards. Their view is that RotK is shaping up as the dominant picture and they state, “Give those hairy little hobbits their Oscar and be done with it. The Return of the King is steamrolling its way to the top prize with momentum not seen since 1997’s Titanic.”. You can read the full article here.

I hate to sound like a cynic, but I don’t think the Academy is going to “give those hobbits their Oscar”. I think it would be great if ROTK got Best Picture, Best Director, or any of the major awards for which it is nominated, but judging by the precedent set by FOTR and TTT, it’s most likely that it will win tons of technical awards, and none of the bigger ones. The Academy doesn’t tend to award the larger, more prestigous awards to anything that’s very unique or different, like fantasy films, epics, sci-fi or musicals. It stinks, but it’s almost like they don’t consider LOTR a serious enough film to actually award them anything that most movie-goers would pay attention to. They’ll probably throw us the Best Score and Best Cinematography bones, just to keep us from revolting. ( 🙂 I’m just kidding, about the revolting part.)

The hobbits should definently win that Oscar. The Return of the King deserves every award that it’s up for!
