Who is Éomer in the films? To put it in Karl Urban’s own words: “He’s very forceful, proud of being a Rohan warrior, but a little bit hot-headed. His job description is Orc killer – that is what he does. He’s the protector of Rohan. He’s out there doing the dirty work, and trying not to lose hope under extraordinarily trying circumstances.”

Éomer is first seen at the Fords of Isen, trying to find Théodred in the aftermath of battle. When he finds the unconscious Heir of Rohan, he rides back to Edoras with his men, carrying Théodred in front of him. When back in Meduseld, he is banished from Rohan by Gríma, officially on the order of Théoden. He then takes the Riders of Rohan that are still loyal to him and the King, and leaves Edoras. They kill the party of Orcs who had taken Merry and Pippin, and then encounter the Three Hunters. After learning their names and their mission, Éomer gives them Hasufel and Arod. He and his Rohirrim then ride off to the north.

He next appears at Helm’s Deep with Gandalf – just in time for reinforcements to turn the tide of the battle. From then on, he remains deeply involved in the War of the Ring. He fights in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, killing a mûmak rider – a move that results in not one, but two, mûmaks toppling over. He is also present when Aragorn rides to the Black Gate.

The last sight of Éomer in the films is at Aragorn’s coronation, wearing the robes of the King of Rohan.

Quotes

“I would cut off your head, dwarf, if it stood but a little higher from the ground.”

“War mongering?? How long is it since Saruman bought you? What was the promised price, Grima? When all the men are dead you will take your share of the treasure. Too long have you watched my sister, too long have you haunted her steps.”

“Now is the hour! Riders of Rohan! Oaths you have taken, now fulfill them all! For lord and land!”
