"...the poor beast had improved wonderfully; it already seemed fatter and stronger, and had begun to show an affection for its new masters, especially for Sam."
The Tolkien Estate has sued New Line Cinema for its share of the profits from the nearly $6 billion that the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy has grossed worldwide. You can read the full article here .
*sigh* All this legal stuff is souring the legacy of PJ’s masterpieces and slowing the Hobbit’s momentum…

Aw man. I thought they would have figured all this stuff out before they even started filming.

That is if the filming ever comes at all now. If they are allowed to terminate the rights to the Hobbit, then we’re at checkmate. Maybe someone other than New Line might pick it up if the Tolkien Estate wins. Then again, what are the chances that the judge will let them terminate the movie rights?

Yeah, unfortunatly the Hobbit movies could be at risk…such a big sue could place New Line back down where it used to be, making small scale movies instead of large ones such as LOTR or the Hobbit:(

I don’t like lawsuits that could terminate any chance I have of seeing a live-action Hobbit, but at the same time, if New-Line agreed to pay royalties to the Estate, I think they should honor the agreement…The Estate controls the right to decide who can or cannot use Sindarin/Quenya, and Peter Jackson probably had to get permission before he could even have it scripted and for the Elves. He makes a trilogy that the Estate would feel held true to Tolkien’s vision, and New Line has to go and screw it all up by not sharing the wealth…Sigh…

Someone said that if New Line loses this lawsuit The Hobbit movies would probebly be made anyway – by some other movie company but in that case Peter Jackson would be able to be the director.

It will still be pretty much impossible for Pete to direct the Hobbit. He’s having scheduling difficulties that could only be solved by waiting even longer to start production. I don’t mind the idea of Del Toro directing, with Pete as an executive producer. I think Guillermo would stay true to the fantasy aspect while still making it very realistic.

But who knows what will come of all of it now.
