Peter Jackson will be shooting The Hobbit at 47.96 frames per second. What does this mean?, well it’s a higher rate than is normally used and James Cameron (director of Avatar) has described the effect as follows; “If watching a 3D movie is like looking through a window, then [with this] we’ve taken the glass out of the window and we’re staring at reality.”.

Whether or not the film will be distributed at this frame rate remains to be seen (as it costs more) but even if the high frame rate is not used at the film’s release it can still be used at a later date (e.g. for DVD release). You can read the full article at slashfilm.com.
