Click here to see Peter Jackson’s response when asked by HitFix whether he was considering splitting the second Hobbit movie into two films; thus turning The Hobbit into a trilogy.
It says the page is gone.
But just going by the title of this topic I don’t like the idea of there being three Hobbit movies. How hard is it to just make it one movie?

Well I’m not too sure about the idea of three movies either. Two is plenty. But it would depend on what the third would possibly be about. It’s probably not that hard to make it into one movie…but think about how long the Lord of the Rings films were without being the extended edition. I’m guessing that the film makers are taking it into consideration of how long people would be willing to sit in a theater and watch a movie.
2 movies I can understand…especally with the break between them where they placed it already. Besides, I don’t mind the wait for the second or anything – it’s quite a fun hype so to say. But three is just begining to sound a bit ridiculious (and, if I may be so bold to say, in a sense, desperate).
We need to remember that The Hobbit movies are not just using The Hobbit as source material. There is a lot of material in the LOTR appendices that can be expanded into the second and third film and doing so would turn the Hobbit/LOTR franchise into a six film series especially as so many of the original actors were willing to come back and reprise their roles.
I really wish that the material in The Silmarillion and The Unfinished Tales was also available but it will probably never be licensed for film until there is a change in the management of The Tolkien Estate.

Alright, after listening to the interview something that’s bugging me is that Peter Jackson does not specifically state that they are considering a third film. He only said that they are considering shooting extra footage and to put it into an extended edition of the Hobbit. It did not sound like he had enough footage for an entire third film. I think there is a misunderstanding somewhere.

I hope they make a third one and put the in-between stuff from the hobbit and lord of the rings in there…like one of the posters said, there is a lot of background information and it would be amazing to see it come alive and help those who do not understand the triology have a more indepth understanding of it.
I ain’t much of a fan of the idea of it being a trilogy, but I think two movies would be just fine. What if the first ends where Bilbo finds the Ring and you get just a quick glimpse of Gollum in the shadows? That would be a good cliff hanger. Ah, but who am I kiddin’? I’m not experienced with this stuff(:
Trilogy or not, I’m still going to see it!!! 😀

Even before The Hobbit began filming rumours were already floating around that three movies would happen but then these rumours were laid to rest when it was officially confirmed that two movies would be made. As well as the up and coming Hobbits movies I am also looking forward to the release of the DVD Extended Edition. Since The Hobbit went into production as of 2011 Forum Boards across the web have being in full discussion concerning everything from the cast and crew, scripts, scenes and props, characters, the list goes on.
We have Tauriel added to the film because of lack of female characters in the book and other scenes perhaps small in detail but important to the book that may end up on the floor and added to the extended edition.
For me a third film would just about cover Bilbo and Gandalf’s adventures at Rivendell and beyond as they both head back to the Shire.
