Christopher Tolkien to halt the Hobbit filming?
Christopher Tolkien will appear in a California court on June 6th and ask a judge to terminate any filming rights to “The Hobbit” over unpaid royalties from the three Lord of the Rings movies. You can read the full story here.

Why? Just when our dream comes true something like this has to happen to dash it to picees.
I can understand him suing for the unpaid royalties because they broke the contract of the film rights that they brought. Plus 7.5% of the billions made from the movies is nothing and it’s going to the Tolkien charitable trust. But C. Tolkien is just using it as an opportunity to stop the Hobbit film because he doesn’t like Hollywood.
However, didn’t JRR Tolkien sign over the film rights of his works already published? The Silmarillion was publish after he died so surely it’s not covered in the film rights? So surely they can’t make the second Hobbit film if it’s based on material taken from The Silmarillion?
I’m confused…
Personally, I say kudos to him. I was reading the transcript of the WetaChat, and the more I read, the less I wanted to see the movie. Besides, I’m sure The Professor is turning in his grave over how his works have been treated. (Yes, I’m a die-hard canon fan, so sue me.)
I hope he doesn’t. 🙁
It seems to me that New Line isn’t paying people the correct amount of what should have been paid to those involved in LOTR. First Peter Jackson, now Tolkien’s son…..
Hollywood is just screwed up…….
Did they just say that “The Silmarillion” takes place between “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”? What are those guys smoking? Unless they meant they’re talking about the very small (compared to the rest of “The Silmarillion”) ‘Of the Rings of Power…’ part.
Anyways, who doesn’t hate Hollywood? But people have been petitioning and hoping and wishing for a “The Hobbit” movie for a very long time. Can’t you let them have their wish Christopher Tolkien?
NewLine really needs to start paying these people!
Having read this, I can’t say I learned anything new..I will say, however, that commenter “Peter” is a pretentious little snot…or perhaps I should say “prat”.
