Howard Leslie Shore was born on October 18th 1946 in Toronto, Canada. Before beginning his work in film however, he served as musical director for Saturday Night Live from 1975-1980. During the span of his twenty-year career, Howard Shore has composed music for films as varied as Mrs. Doubtfire and The Return of the King.

In 1989 he won his first major award, when he was given a Genie (the highest award in his native Canada) for his work in David Croneneberg’s Dead Ringers. He has also won a myriad of awards for his work on The Lord of the Rings films, including an Oscar in 2002 for Best Score with the film The Fellowship of the Ring, an honor which he received again, along with Best Song in 2004 for his work on the trilogy’s final installment The Return of the King.
