The Common Speech name for the valley known as Azanulbizar to the dwarves and Nanduhirion to the elves.

The Dale lay below the East-gate of Moria between two arms of the Misty Mountains, and it was a sacred place to the Dwarves of Durin's House - for several reasons:

- the Dimrill Dale was the site of the Battle of Azanulbizar, where so many dwarves were slain by orcs that the survivors were forced to burn their dead, instead of bury them as per dwarvish custom.

- the valley contained several places greatly revered by the Dwarves, including Kibil-nâla (the source of the Silverlode), Kheled-zarâm (the Mirrormere) and Durins Stone (the stone from where Durin first saw the reflection of stars in the Mirrormere).
