The Ered Gorgoroth lay at the south of Dorthonion. The range was full of peaks and precipices that were infested by Giant Spiders - the descendants of Ungoliant.

Only one successful crossing of the Ered Gorgoroth was recorded - that of Beren of the Edain.

A translation of the name Ered Gorgoroth was Mountains of Terror.
