Great Orcs was apparently another name for the Uruk-hai, the race of seemingly cross-bred orcs who were bigger and stronger than regular orcs, and could withstand light.

This name was only ever used by Éomer, so it may have only been commonplace in the lands of the Rohirrim, but that is pure assumption.
