Hobbitish was the language used in the Shire at the time of the War of the Ring, a provincial dialect of Westron with some vocabulary taken from the Mannish languages of Dunland and the Vales of the River Anduin.

The Hobbits seem to have freely adopted whatever Mannish language was used around them and to have used these tongues carelessly and without great regard for form.

These tendancies may be seen by comparing the Rohirric word 'kûddûkan' with the Hobbitish word 'kuduk', both forms meaning "hole-dweller', or Hobbit.
