Lórien was the most ancient Elvish kingdom to survive in Middle-earth after the fall of Gil-Galad. It was situated near the Hithaeglir, in Rhovanion.

In the Fourth Age, the Silvan elves of Lórien followed Celeborn across the Anduin to establish East Lórien (Lothlórien), and only a few elves remained in the original Lórien.
