Roper Gamgee was also known as Hobson Gammidge, son of Hob Gammidge. He was later called 'Roper' because he worked as a roper like his father, and Gamgee because it was a play on his father's nickname of 'Gammidgy'.

Roper was the first Gamgee and was the grandfather of Samwise Gamgee.
