Tar-Meneldur was the third child and only son of Tar-Elendil. His sisters were named Silmarien, from whom were descended the Lords of Andunië, and Isilmë.

Meneldur's right name was Írimon but he called himself Meneldur because of his great love of star-lore. He became the fifth of the Kings of Númenor.

Meneldur was a wise but gentle and patient king. He took to wife Almarian daughter of Vëantur who had been a Captain of Ships under Meneldur's father. She bore to him three children: Tar-Aldarion a son, and two daughters named Ailinel and Almiel.

Meneldur gave up the sceptre to his son suddenly and long before his time because he heard of the growing troubles that were plaguing Gil-galad of Lindon. Gil-galad had become aware of an evil spirit, which was hostile to the Eldar and the Dúnedain, stirring in Middle-earth.

Tar-Meneldur reigned for 143 years and was succeeded by his son Tar-Aldarion in 883 SA.
