It was a beautiful summer’s day in the Shire and Samwise Gamgee sat in his garden holding his young daughter, Elanor, on his lap; telling her stories of his adventures years ago with Mister Frodo Baggins. I was a day like any other, until a shrill scream pierced the calm. “What in the……” Sam whispered, looking at his daughter as if she might know. Suddenly a group of children came running down the road; scruffy children, dusty from their games. One of the children called for Sam’s help “Mister Gardener!! Come quick! Lily’s stuck up a tree and she’s scared stiff of heights! We can’t get her down!” Sam pulled his child into his arms and followed the children “Come along Elanor, you can come too” he said, as Elanor clutched his shirt in her fists.
The tree was just up the lane, so it wasn’t too long till Sam saw a group of children gathered around the trunk and looking up into the branches. About halfway up, a small hobbit lass was clinging to a branch, her eyes clamped shut. Sam set Elanor down and pushed through the group, he shouted up to the little girl “Lily?” The girl glance down then shut her eyes again and whimpered. “How’d she get up there?” Sam asked one child. “She climbed up.” The lad answered, “don’t know why.” Sam looked back up at the child, “Lily, its OK I’ll get you down.” Though he wasn’t sure how, he knew that he wasn’t going to be able to get her to climb down. Sam felt a tug at his sleeve; it was Elanor. “Ya gonna save her?” Sam smiled “Yes honey.” Then whispered to himself “Here I go….”
Sam Placed his foot on a low branch and, hoping to Gandalf it would hold him, pulled himself up. He went slowly, one branch at a time, till he found himself face-to-face with LilY. She needed no coaxing. As soon as she saw Sam she eased herself into his arms. She was considerably light so Sam had no trouble getting down. When he reached the bottom, the children burst into applause.

When Sam got home, and Rosie asked were he and Elanor had been all afternoon, he just gave a giggling Elanor a wink and said “Oh, nowhere.”
When Lily’s friend (who had been away visiting family) asked what had happened, Lily smiled and said, “I met a real hero………” and looked down the lane at Bag End, “The bravest person in the world….”
