Author’s Note: My first song fic, hopefully people won’t mind that it is one. It’s gonna be basically a better version of the “Thy Heart Will Go On” fic that I made. I hated that one… well…maybe not. I mean, I was thinking of doing the classic ‘Legolas thinks about his time on ME after Aragorn is dead’ but I’ll start it differently and then probably just end it that way. I don’t know, I just hope you like it.

Disclaimer: I don’t own anything.

– Into the West –

Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
The night is falling
You have come to journey’s end

“Legolas, please. Lie down, I will not go anywhere,” an old, frail man, gray in hair, admonished.

“But you will leave tonight. We all already know, and I do not want to be sleeping when you go,” Legolas said as he gazed pitifully at Aragorn. Unshed tears were swimming in his eyes.

“I promise, I will not go. You haven’t rested since your last attack with the sea longing and that was quite some time ago. Sleep now,” Aragorn said, softly.

Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore

Aragorn was right, Legolas realized. It was quite some time ago and he was indeed very weary.

Legolas let Aragorn gently push him down onto the bed and a sudden need for sleep engulfed him. As the last coherent thought left Legolas’ mind, he vaguely felt tears run down the sides of his face that soon become brushed away by the human’s thumb.

Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away

Aragorn gazed sadly at Legolas’ sleeping face as the elf cried in his sleep. He was sure that Legolas did not intend to, and it hurt to see the elf cry.

Aragorn then silently stood up and gathered the elf’s upper body in his arms, adjusting himself so that he was resting against the headboard and Legolas’ head was resting on his chest. Legolas shifted in his sleep, seemingly snuggling closer to Aragorn.

Safe in my arms
You’re only sleeping

Aragorn prayed to the Valar that Legolas was dreaming a good dream, hopefully of the sea, as it always soothed his friend…for the human knew what was to come.

Both man and elf knew that Aragorn would break his promise. He would go and fall into a deep sleep…a sleep of death.

Legolas would wake up alone.

What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?

Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come

To carry you home

And Legolas did.

The warmth he’d had around his body now left him feeling cold. His lips quivered and his brow furrowed and he tried to keep from breaking down. He knew where Aragorn had gone and he prayed nonstop that it was not true. But in his heart, he knew that it was.

He ran down many flights of stairs until he was atop the citadel. He ran into the House of Kings and there he saw his best friend; eyes closed in deep sleep that he knew would turn into death.

And all will turn to silver glass
A light on the water
All souls pass

And there Legolas stayed for many days, never leaving until he knew that Aragorn was indeed gone. His soul had passed and when it did, his hope of ever seeing his friend again faded.

Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time

Arwen then came. She gave him a note that was addressed to him from Aragorn. She had not opened it of course, but waited until her husband was truly gone before giving him the note. She stayed with Legolas as he read it.

Legolas,

I know that right now you are sitting beside my body in despair. Don’t. Please don’t. It broke my heart when I had to leave you to sleep. I did not want you to see me go, and I am truly sorry. But do not despair; go to Valinor and be happy and remember all the good times. You and I will meet again, I know we will.

Namárië, gwador-nin.

Estel

Don’t say
We have come now to the end
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again

Legolas now had tears running down his face once more, but this time he was not alone. Arwen wrapped her arms around him and they stayed that way for several moments. It was already night so they slept there, beside the one that they loved.

And you’ll be here in my arms
Just sleeping

Legolas remembered that day well and thoughts of it still brought tears to his eyes. It hadn’t been very long ago, but he hated every minute of it.

“Come on lad, the ship is ready,” came a gruff voice behind him. Legolas only nodded and boarded the ship, helping Gimli. His friend too was gray, old and frail, and it reminded him so much of Aragorn.

Legolas swiftly turned away and looked out onto the horizon, hearing the seagulls cry.

What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?

Legolas looked into the darkening sky, seeing the stars that were now appearing. It was not long until the night sky was finally revealed to him in all its glory. He saw an exceptionally bright star and felt a tug at the corners of his mouth, for it was not Eärendil that he usually looked to.

Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come
To carry you home

The moon rose but still that star shone brightly and still Legolas looked on. Gimli asked if he was looking at the same star that he always did, but Legolas just shook his head.

And all will turn to silver glass
A light on the water

Legolas looked out as the ship approached the edge of the sea and saw the star’s reflection on the crystal clear water.

He was not looking at Eärendil.

Grey ships pass
Into the West

He was looking at an old friend.
