Chapter 1: The Necklace

Sarah was walking home from school. It was raining heavily and she was soaking wet, but she ignored that as much as she could. She had been having a hard time at school that day. As usual all the kids made fun of her pointy ears, and her perfect skin, and the fact that she was an adopted child only made matters worse for her. She wasn’t really a child though. She was 16 years old, or at least almost. Her birthday was in one week. But for her, it didn’t really matter; her foster parents didn’t pay much attention to her whether it was her birthday or not. Just a normal day of the year for me, she thought.

Finally she reached her house. It was a small house; it didn’t have much furniture or anything interesting inside. She went in and up to her room, and started on some homework. Her foster parents were not there at the moment, probably out shopping for food or something. Then she heard a knock on the door, so she went down and opened it.

“Hello,” she said to the delivery man.

“Good evening miss, I have a package for you.” He handed her a small box that had a small note on it: “Do not open until your birthday,” it said.

“Thanks Mr. Smith,” said Sarah.

“You have a good day Miss,” said the man and left.

Sarah looked at the box to find who had sent it, but there was nothing. Who would be sending me a birthday present, she thought to herself. She went back upstairs, and put the box on the table in her room. She sighed and thought to herself, If only my Lord of the Rings books were not just stories, but real people and places. I would be so much happier there.

Suddenly a thought came to her. What if inside the box was the necklace from the Lord of the Rings movies that she had been wanting? The Evenstar, thought Sarah. She was now interested but decided to wait until her birthday to open the present.

March 16 – Sarah’s birthday

Sarah woke up with a start, and then she remembered, today was her birthday! And it was Saturday, so she had no school either. Then she jumped out of bed and looked at the box she had gotten a few days ago. She picked it up and opened it, then inside there was a box, she slowly opened it and inside was… The Evenstar Necklace she had wanted so much! She was so happy!

She took it out of the box and put it on. It looked so much like a beautiful star. Then she thought, who gave this to her? She had asked her parents and they said they didn’t send it to her. So she was puzzled but happy at the same time. She got up, got dressed and started to go to the backyard. But she heard a knock on the door, so she went and opened it. And at the door was a beautiful lady.

“Hello,” said Sarah.

“Hello Sarah,” said the woman.

Sarah stood there in surprise. “How do you know my name?” she asked.

“You will see, come with me,” answered the woman, and as if she was in a trance Sarah followed to her to the backyard. “My name is Nienna Helyanwe,” the woman said finally. Sarah looked at her for a minute, and then she remembered.

“That is an elvish name,” she said.

“Of course it is. For I am an Elf,” replied Nienna. Sarah stared at her for a minute and thought, am I dreaming?
