Frodo Baggins sat reading under a tree in the woods of the Shire. Dangling in front of him was the foot of his best friend, Lily Bracegirdle. He yanked it downwards and heard a voice cry, “Frodo Baggins! If you pull me out of this tree, I’ll give you a beating you won’t soon forget!”
Frodo knew that she would never actually do that, so he pulled her out of the tree. Lily fell with a scream and landed in his lap. As if landing on him hadn’t put him in enough pain, she punched him in the stomach so hard that he doubled over. Lily had grown up with around the male hobbits and was not very feminine. That might be why she knew how to pack a punch.
Lily fell to the ground in a fit of laughter as she watched her friend moan about being punched in the stomach by a girl. Then the two hobbits stopped and listened as they heard a voice singing. “The road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the road has gone, and I must follow if I can,” sang the husky sounding voice.
The hobbits grinned at one another as they realized who it was. They raced down the hill until they came to the road. There was an old, weathered looking man dressed in gray, sitting in a cart. Frodo crossed his arms and said with a little smirk on his face, “You’re late!”
“A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to,” said the old man as he gave Frodo a stern look.
They looked at each other and tried as hard as they could not to smile. Finally, they both burst out laughing. Frodo leaped into the wizard’s arms. “It’s wonderful to see you Gandalf!”
Gandalf laughed heartily and said, “You didn’t think Id miss your Uncle Bilbo’s birthday?”
Lily coughed loudly and obviously. Gandalf looked up and peered at her. “Lily Bracegirdle!” he said. “You’ve grown up so much. I scarcely recognize you!”
Lily leaped into the cart and gave Gandalf a huge hug. “I see you’re still not very feminine, giving me a bear hug, but you’ve grown to look like a proper young lady.”
“Thank you, Gandalf,” said Lily beaming with pleasure. She wasn’t normally referred to as pretty, even though she was a lovely young hobbit, except by one particular hobbit….
“I suppose this means you’ve got that young Peregrin Took still following you everywhere?” asked Gandalf, not knowing the seriousness of his mistake.
Lily did not respond, but only glared off into space. Frodo got a mischievous look in his eyes and whispered to Gandalf, “Tonight at the party we’re going to have her dance with Pippin. Poor fellow, it’s all he thinks about.”
Lily, most unfortunately, overheard him. “FRODO BAGGINS!” she shrieked. “You will do nothing of the kind! You’d be lucky if I ever spoke to you again!”
With that said, she leaped out of the cart. Frodo sighed, “Well, I better go after her. You remember what happened last time. By the time we got her out of the alehouse, she didn’t even care that it was Pippin who carried her home. Let’s not see if she can get worse!”
The hobbit jumped out of the cart and raced after him friend. Gandalf smiled and said to himself, “It’s good to be back.”

“Oh c’mon, Pip! You act that girl’s a bloody elf or somethin’,”
It’s a good thing Pippin was into much of a drunken stupor to listen to his friend Meriadoc Brandybuck. He was sitting on a bench watching the other hobbits dancing. Frodo and Merry sat around him. They had already set Samwise Gamgee up with Rosie Cotton. They were keeping an eye out for Lily.
“There she is,” whispered Frodo.
Lily was dancing with a few of her hobbit friends. She danced in rhythm to the music, her body swaying beautifully. She was wearing a light blue dress and had a flower in her flowing, brown hair.
“Right,” said Merry. “Let’s go get her.”
He snuck behind Lily, not knowing that Frodo, giggling to himself, was not coming. He grabbed her round the waist and tried to pull her over. She turned around quickly and slapped him hard. Then she ran off.
Lily quickly rounded a corner and ran smack into another hobbit.
“Sam!” said Lily. “Will you please give me somewhere to go where Frodo won’t find me? I don’t want to even dance will that fool, Pippin!”
“Oh c’mon, Lily,” sighed Sam. “It’s not that big of a deal. After all, I danced with Rosie didn’t I?”
“Yeah, well you love her,” snapped Lily.
Sam blushed and said, “Oh go on!”
Lily let out a snort of frustration and turned on her heel. She stormed in the direction of where Pippin and his friends had been. Sam smiled to himself and walked away.

Pippin was just starting to become sober when he saw, as if a vision, Lily walking towards. Before he knew it, she was standing in front of him.
She put her hands on her hips. “Well?” she said, sounding very annoyed.
Pippin didn’t need to be asked twice. He leapt up and swung his arms about her waist. They danced it the crowd of other hobbits. The music was playing wildly now. Lily gazed at Pippin as he swung her around. She never remembered him looking as handsome as he did now.
Pip was just in ecstasy. He was dancing with the girl he loved, and for once, she was protesting. The song ended and he was still holding Lily. All caught up in the moment, he leaned in to kiss her when they heard a voice say,”Well, you to sure are gettin’ cozy!”
Lily pushed Pippin away. Merry was standing there giggling at them. Pippin gave him a dirty look. “C’mon Pip, Gandalf’s fireworks are in this tent!”
Lily gave Pippin a questioning look, “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Um….well…..,” started Pippin.
“Let’s just say we’re going to have our own little firework show,” said Merry mischievously.
“Gandalf will roast you both if you mess with his fireworks,” said Lily.
“Don’t worry, Lily,” smiled Merry. “I’m sure that he’ll leave something of Pippin’s for you!”
Lily stormed off in frustration. “She seems to do that a lot,” giggled Merry.
“Oh, leave her alone. C’mon, let’s do this,” said Pippin hurriedly.

Only a short time later, Gandalf had caught the two hooligans and set them up washing the many dishes. Their faces were covered in soot. Lily brushed past them and whispered, “I told you so!”
She headed towards the road to go back home. Pippin threw Merry a pleading look as he attempted to wipe of some of the dust from his face. Merry sighed and said, sounding rather annoyed, “Fine, you go ahead and waste your time chasing after her. I’ll finish the dishes.”
Pippin hurried off and Merry hollered after him, “You owe me an ale!!!!!”

Pippin caught up with Lily as she reached the gate of her house. She quickly hid a little smirk that had been creeping up her face. “What do you want?” she snapped.
“I came to walk you home,” Pippin said timidly.
“Well, you’re walking, here I am, and there’s my home, so good-bye!” said Lily, and with that she turned on her heel and marched up to her front door.
“Lily, wait!”
Her heart jumped into her throat and she turned around. Pippin ran up to her, grabbed her, and kissed her softly on the lips, all in three seconds. Lily stood stupefied. Then, she slapped him and slammed the door in his face.
Pippin stood there rubbing his cheek and wondering whether it was all worth it. Then, he remembered the way she looked at him when they were dancing. “Maybe there is hope,” he said softly.
Then a voice from Lily’s bedroom window yelled, “Or NOT!”
