The Reunion
By Firniswin

Light splayed through the trees as the warm summer breeze ran swiftly along the ground, blowing old rags and dust along as it made it’s way toward Minas Tirith. The sun rose slowly in the blue sky as the winds blew carelessly through the courtyards and palace.
The white tree slightly swayed in the wind as The Lady Arwen casually glided through the courtyard looking happily at the sky. Her blue dress flowed gently in the hot season’s breeze.

Meanwhile Legolas rode swiftly forward on his horse, Glirhwest, with Gimli riding in back, Arod had recently died from old age. Both looked as if they were determined to get somewhere and very soon. No creature dare cross the path of a dwarf and elf with such looks of anger on their faces.

Aragorn sat on his throne undaunted by the man that was rushing up the stairs and breathing heavily. “My King, a rider off in the distance.” The tower guard said shakily. “Thank you, Barnor.” Aragorn rose from his seat.
Up in one of the top rooms in the palace, two hobbits sat. Both drinking some wine and eating a meal. “Well, how are things, Master Holdwine?” asked the younger hobbit. “Oh, fine Thain Perigrin,” said the older one smiling.
A knock came on the large beautifully carven oak door. “Who is it?” Asked Merry suspiciously.
A young boys voice answered from the other side of the door: “It is Eldarion.”
“Oh, come right in little prince.” Pippin called out slapping Merry on the shoulder.
The young boy entered, he was about five foot one and about ten years of age. He was the spitting image of his father except his hair was combed and wet and he wore a suit of green.
“Sirs, my father requests your presents immediately.” Eldarion said smiling. “Oi, look there. Young Eldarion is quite handsome. Don’t you agree Master Holdwine?”
Pippin said standing up and holding out his wrinkled hand to Merry. “Yes, he is the spittin image of his father.” Merry answered. “Hold on a minute and let me grab my cane.” Merry said gleefully.
A few minutes later and Merry and Pippin were in the hall with Aragorn talking together.
“Eldarion, would you go to greet our guests at the gate?” Aragorn questioned even though he already knew his son’s answer. ” Oh, yes of course.” he said running.
Eldarion enjoyed listening to Gimli and Legolas’s conversations and always wanted to greet them at the gate.

Aragorn stood in silence for a moment then started to pace around the large hall his gray eyes still bright and fixed on the ceiling. “This must be pretty serious.” Pippin whispered to Merry. “Naw, he is always like this.” Merry whispered back.
“Despite all your thoughts I can hear you.” Aragorn said smiling not turning his gaze to them as he spoke. “Well um we just . . .u. well. .Ya.” The two hobbits said unanimously. “Don’t worry. You are not in trouble.” Aragorn said smirking slightly.
“Phew, I thought you were going to blame us for that missing elderberry wine.” Pippin brushed his hand over his brow. “What?” Aragorn said laughing
“Nothing!” Merry said clasping his hand over his friend’s mouth. “Nothing, he was just telling about how nice Eldarion looked when he came up to get us.” “Oh, is that all?” Aragorn said smiling and sitting down on his throne.

Eldarion ran to the gates as fast as his young legs would carry him. He had always loved to hear the stories of the trio’s travels; his favorite was the one about Helms Deep.
He ran swiftly to the gate and ran up the stairs to the top of the wall his eyes gleaming in the sun. He saw quite far away still what looked like only one figure but that was because Gimli was to short for him to see behind Legolas. But he was not riding on Arod like usual, this horse was faster. It was white like Arod but it looked younger.
Her strained his eyes to see but it was too far away, if only I was an elf. He thought to himself as he tried to see. He sat down and waited for the riders to come closer so he could see them better.
About half an hour later He heard voices down near the gate. Eldarion got up to see Legolas had jumped off the horse and was now leading it to the gate. He ran down the stairs and stopped to see the gate opening wide and Legolas leading the tired horse in with Gimli still on its back.

Legolas helped the dwarf down and they both bowed low to Eldarion. Oh prince of Minas Tirith they said slowly.
Eldarion jumped on the elf and hugged him. Legolas was so surprised he landed on his back on the ground.
“Oohh” Legolas said in a groan. “Well well, someone is happy to see us!” Legolas laughed trying to get up. Gimli just smiled and leaned on his double bladed axe.
“Father requests your presence in the courtyard by the white tree.” Eldarion said getting off Legolas and taking him by the hand. “Forgive an old elf.” Legolas said smirking “Elves don’t get old.” Eldarion said with a laugh. “Well we do, we just don’t look it or feel it.” Legolas concluded. “Lucky.” Gimli said growling.
“Will you tell me a story later.” Eldarion asked happily. “Yes, of course!” Legolas replied.
“Before we go on though I must bring my horse to the stables.” The elf said sadly.
“Why is Arod not with you.” Eldarion asked mournfully. “You will learn of that later.” Legolas said forcing a smile. “What is your horses name?” Eldarion asked quietly. “Her name is Glirhwest, it means soft breeze in Sindarin. “How beautiful she is.” Eldarion stared at her in awe. “Yes she is strong and fearless, and one of the most beautiful horses I have seen in all my life.” Legolas patted the horse. “And that is a pretty long time.” Gimli grabbed a brush and passed it to Legolas.
After Legolas was done brushing her he grabbed his bags and Gimli grabbed his and they went up the city streets top the palace.
Through the streets it was cold and dark, only torches lit the way through the unpleasant darkness of night in Minas Tirith. They came upon the palace, tall and white with torches lit inside. They went up the stairs and came into the huge hall, torches were lit. The room’s happiness did not match Legolas’s bad news.

Aragorn was seated on his throne and Pippin and Merry were sitting in upholstered chairs on the side.
The two excited hobbits jumped at the site of their beloved companions and ran toward them. Pippin hugged Legolas around the waist and Merry shook hands with Gimli.
“Oh it is great to see you.” The two hobbits said unanimously. “It is great to see you also Master Meriodoc and Master Perigrin.” Legolas said happily returning the hug.
“Oh yes, it is grand to see our two little companions still jumping about.” Gimli could not resist any longer and was now hugging Pippin and Merry. “Say Pippin you feeling alright?” Gimli asked looking a little concerned. “Gimli, it has been about twenty five years since that troll fell on me.” Pippin laughed. “Oh right.” Gimli rubbed his head in confusion. “So how old are you two now?” Legolas asked. “I am fifty-four.” Pippin said smiling. “Well pull my beard, you are quite old then.” Gimli stoked him mustache.
“I am Sixty-one.” Merry said triumphantly. “Well Master Merry, you are quite a old lad are you not?” Legolas said smiling. Merry just smiled.

Legolas strode forward his eyes looking to the ground; his sorrow had been forgotten for only a mere moment. Tears slowly caressed his soft white cheeks as he spoke: “My King,” He began. ” Mirkwood has been attacked. And being its King I ask for the aid of your men. Many of my kin have needlessly been slaughtered.” Legolas’s voice echoed down the halls.
“Legolas I am sorry.” Aragorn felt his heart quicken and his rage began.
“I will accompany you to Mirkwood along with nine-hundred of our best archers, swordsmen, Javelin throwers and fighters.” Aragorn stood to his feet.
“Thank You, Aragorn.” Legolas still did not show any joy. His eyes were still fixed on the same tile it had been on when he had first asked.
“Legolas, what is wrong?” Aragorn asked fearfully. “They killed her.” Legolas cried out in a rage that none have ever seen him in before. “Killed who?” Aragorn asked coming over to his dejected friend.
“Aerlinn, they speared her in the back. I watched it all. I tried to stop them, but they.” Legolas did not finish he broke down in tears. Aragorn came quickly over to his friend and hugged him. “What did they do?” Aragorn said kindly.
Legolas lifted his cloak to reveal his bloody scorched skin. “Then they beat me hard over the head. But before that happened I watched her run to my side. She tried to help me but then the merciless creatures speared her threw the back.
“The last thing she said was I love you.” Legolas’s tears dripped from his chin, His eyes red.
Aragorn hugged his depressed friend his eyes as sad as Legolas’s.
“Where is your son?” Aragorn asked wiping a tear from Legolas’s cheek.
“He is with Glorfindel in Rivendell.” Legolas said with a sigh. Legolas arose his eyes seemed to pierce the wall as he looked with great interest at one spot were a mural was.
“We leave tomorrow!” He said satisfied.
“Anything you wish.” Aragorn said happily. Aragorn handed Legolas a handkerchief, Legolas wiped the tears away from his eyes as he bowed low to Aragorn. “You need not bow, friend.” Aragorn told him gently. “Thank You Aragorn, you are a true King.” Legolas said in awe. “Go now and rest we leave at first light.” Aragorn said to Legolas and Gimli.

It was a beautiful afternoon and light flowed through the window and it was calm and peaceful “I want to go.” Pippin said angrily. “Frodo was fifty when he started on his long and dangerous journey.” Pippin was very angry. “Pippin, Frodo came back and found he could not even live in Middle Earth anymore.” Merry laughed. “Oh, please. I want to come.” Pleaded Pippin. “Why don’t you go and ask Aragorn then?” Merry inquired. “I think I will.” Pippin said as he went swiftly out the door.
“Oh well, I don’t want to go.” Merry said shrugging his shoulders. “Well Pippin is still somewhat young.” Legolas said sadly. He was sitting on the ledge of the window looking out towards the flowing Anduin that now glowed with the shining of the sun.
“Legolas don’t be sad.” Merry said his hands flopping down to his sides. “When you are sad it makes me sad too.” “Oh Meriodoc, Their seems to be no point in life anymore.” Legolas said with a sigh. “And don’t call me Meriodoc!” Merry said banging his fist on the table. “You never call me that, call me Merry. Like you used to.” Merry’s voice rang out.
“Merry you don’t understand!” Legolas cried out. “She loved me so much and I loved her. And then her life was just ripped away and it was because of me. If I had not been cut and burned on my side she would have ran with the other elves’s. She thought I was right behind her and then when she saw I wasn’t she came back for me.”
Legolas turned his keen blue eyes back to the sky.
Merry turned and went back down the stairs to leave Legolas alone.
“Merry!” Legolas turned back to Merry. “I am sorry.” Legolas said sorrowfully.
“No, I am sorry. How would I know what is like to loose a loved one?” Merry said shrugging.

Pippin ran up the stairs, he seemed really happy. “Guess what? Aragorn said while he was gone I could help Arwen and Eldarion with business stuff. Pippin said excitedly. “Wow!” Merry said. “That is a real honor.” “I know.” Pippin said jumping joyously. “You will keep an eye on him won’t you Merry?” Legolas whispered.
Merry nodded his head slowly then rolled his eyes. “Come on Pip, let’s start our royal wine tasting “duties.” Merry winked at Legolas. “Oh before you two go start your “duties” have you seen Gimli?” Legolas asked nervously. “I think he said he was helping Aragorn pick out some armor.” Pippin looked as if he was thinking as he said it. “Thank You.” The saddened elf turned back to the sky and looked up his clear blue eyes looking down at the Anduin as he sang gently to himself:

I sing a song of sorrow,
I sing a song of grief.
A song that has been sang,
Over hill and beneath.
Aerlinn, Aerlinn.
Song, Song.
My heart goes ever on and on.

He wiped his teary eyes as he removed himself gently from the windowsill, careful not to move the skin that had cut in battle. He went down the stairs in search of his dwarf friend.

Gimli was helping Aragorn find a mail shirt in the dark armor room. He searched high and low until they found the perfect one. It was not at all tight but he could move in it comfortably. “Shouldn’t the elf be suiting up?” Gimli said as he searched for a helmet. “He will.” Aragorn said as Gimli tried to push a helmet that did not fit on his head. “Gimli!” Aragorn growled. “It won’t fit, quit trying to force it.”
“Gimli! Are you not going to help me?” Legolas said leaning against the stairwell.
“Of course I will. But I would like to finish Aragorn first if you don’t mind.”
“No that is fine I will do it myself.” Legolas laughed.

After finding all the proper gear they went to the weaponry room, were they found swords, axes, knives, bows and arrows, and any other weapon you could possibly think of.
” I think all I will need are some arrows.” Legolas said checking the tips and feathers at the end. “I have Anduril and a bow and arrows.” Aragorn said unsheathing the mighty sword. “Well all I need is to pack food and water.” Aragorn said sheathing the sword again. ” I am about ready, I need food and water but otherwise I am ready.” Legolas said putting the arrows he had found in his quiver.
“I have been ready.” Gimli said drinking a large mug full of beer.

Pippin and Merry ran down the stairs and what they saw was hard for them to believe.
Three warriors all suited in armor with swords at their sides save Gimli whose axe was at his waist. Gimli patted the large double bladed axe and said in a happy low growl: “Lets hunt some orc.”
Legolas was suited with metal plates and his knives were attached to his quiver on his back. His bow was strapped to his quiver. He had only small elvish slippers on his feet and his face held a grim smile.
Aragorn had a chain mail shirt on and heavy boots that were clean without a speck of dust. At his side Anduril was sheathed in a black leather scabbard. His bow was attached to his quiver also and he had a smirk on his face.
Gimli had the same he had always worn plus a new set of shiny throwing axes.
His tough eyes pierced the two hobbits as he glared viciously.
“We came to tell you that the army is ready and awaits your command.” Pippin said still in shock. “Good. Tell General doranine that we will leave at sunrise.” Aragorn said his face grim.
“Yes sirs.” Merry said tugging at Pippin’s hand. Pippin followed slowly up the stairs still in a state of shock from seeing his friends the way they had looked twenty-five years before. They trio followed the two astonished hobbits up the stairs and went into the hall to find a crowd awaiting them. Aragorn stood up and started speaking as the red sun was setting. His armor gleamed red and his face was stern and joyless.

My men, I have no better words to say than you have served me well,
And I have never seen such dedicated men in my long life.
Never have I set my eyes upon men so brave and so cunning.
All I wanted to say is when we are fighting against the enemy remember what you are fighting for. For liberty, freedom, and for all free peoples of Middle Earth.
Fight hard and do not let your minds stray from the purpose of this fight.
Show Mordor that we are not afraid.
After Aragorn had said his speech the crowd left and went to their barracks applauding all the way.

Later that night Legolas and Gimli felt tired from all the day’s activities so they decided to go to bed.
“Oh, I will be right back. I have to get this wound fixed.” Legolas said pulling off the bloody and dirty bandage that was wrapped at his middle. “Oh fine, but hurry back, I don’t want to be the one to find you face on the ground like last time.” Gimli said snuggling deeper into the sheets.

Legolas Went down the stairs still smirking a little at Gimli’s remark. He went carefully, his side burned badly.
When he came to the bottom of the stairs he heard a noise, a sort of crack, like the sound of footsteps outside in the forest. His head turned quickly to the place where he had heard the noise. But nothing was there, No shadow, No figure, no nothing. He shrugged and took it that his mind was just playing games with him. He hurried off in the direction of The Houses of Healing.
It was dark out and the sky was filled with stars. The moon shown bright as lit up the night. Legolas hurried down the torch lit alleys and streets not wanting Gimli to actually get worried and come searching.
He still could not help the Erie feeling that someone or something was watching him.
He turned quickly on his heel to see something quickly dart out of sight. He dared not follow it since he carried no weapon. He just ran as quickly as he could to The Houses of Healing.
When he got inside a nurse walked calmly up to him. She was at least sixty and had white flowing hair. Her face was gentle and pure. “Do you need something?” She asked smiling. “Yes, I need my side bandaged. If you don’t mind.” Legolas asked in a quite tone. “If you are to busy I can do it myself all I need is some bandages.” He looked behind his shoulder as he said it.
“Oh I can do it.” The woman said leading him to a room.
“You can sit on that bed if you like.” She said as she walked over to a wooden table and grabbed some supplies. He sat down and unloosened his shirt and tunic, and then showed the woman the wound. “Oh dear!” The woman said in astonishment. “How did that happen?” She gently touched the scratch. “I am Legolas Son of Thranduil king of Mirkwood.” Legolas scooted back away from the woman. “My forest was attacked and this is the price I paid for not being prepared.” Legolas said sadly lowering his eyes to the floor. “Have you any wife?” She said trying to put ointment on Legolas’s wound. “Yes, I had a wife, fair, wise, beautiful.” Legolas said his voice sorrowful. “Her name was Aerlinn daughter of Arlinor. I have a son his name is Melthenlass.”
Legolas said jumping little when she out the ointment on his wound. “Oh!” She said calmly. “Would you stand a minute?” She asked helping him to his feet.
Legolas rose and stood silent while she wrapped the bandage around his middle.
“Will you tell me all of what happened?” She asked interested n how things had happened.
“Only in short.” Legolas said, “It was very quite that day, nothing seemed to be wrong. Aerlinn and me were taking a walk and watching the little ones play in the grass. I am so glad we left Melthenlass in Rivendell. But yes we were walking and talking together. When an elf bounded forward calling Attack! Attack! Every elf in Mirkwood that had a weapon used it that day. I tried desperately to make Aerlinn go
With the other elves, but she saw me sink to the ground. She came to my side and tried to comfort me but then a orc came and . . . . . And . . . . ..” Legolas broke down again in tears. He could not finish the story every time he thought of Aerlinn his emotions welled up inside. “I can’t finish.” He said in a whisper. “Oh please try, I might be able to help.” She said kindly. “Alright She was cut in the back by a axe.
Then as she fell into my arms one of those scum hit me hard over the head with a club.
I don’t remember anymore until this morning.
Something was shaking me hard and it hurt. I found out it was my best friend, Gimli. He was shaking me furiously and I saw that he had dragged me out of a fire. That is how my wound was scorched. Then I saw my horse I had had for near twenty-five years was in the fire. An axe in the heart had hit him. So Gimli rode me a little way, I sat on the back of our new horse and he guided the horse. He had wrapped my wound with a piece of cloth but that was all he had. So we came here.” Legolas concluded letting out a sigh.
“Oh that is tragic!” She sighed sadly gently helping Legolas stand back up.
“Careful now” She said pushing a loose hair back behind his ear. “Listen,” the woman said with a smile. “She loved you and would not want you to be sulking in sorrow. She would want you to live your life and raise your son to the King he was meant to be.” She walked him to the door. “You may come by and talk any time.” She said smiling. “Thank You!” Legolas waved goodbye to the woman as he turned to go back to the palace.

He still felt as if something was following him. He turned quickly to look, but saw nothing but the lit torches and the shadows of barrels and wagons. He walked quietly through and went quickly up the stairs. He came into the hall and slipped off up the stairwell to his room. When he returned Gimli had fallen asleep and was snoring loudly. Legolas put out the candlelight and got into his bed. His lids dropped and he fell asleep, the wind howled on the warm summer night. Only the stars showed brightly out on the plains.

The next morning Legolas awoke and found he was alone. He saw the sun was already showing small rays over the hill. He hopped out of his warm bed and got on all his war gear. As soon as he had slipped on his slippers he was off down he stairwell following the voices, he quickened his pace.
Gimli was at the bottom of the stairs awaiting his comrade. “Sleepyhead.” He said as Legolas jumped from the fifth stair up to the slick floor. “Sorry Gimli.” Legolas said looking down on his friend.
They hurried outside and ran to the stables, were Glirhwest was already saddled and fed. Legolas helped Gimli quickly on and then sprang from where he stood and slid onto the back of the horse saying as he landed: “Noro lim Glirhwest, noro lim!” The horse ran with great speed as it caught up to Aragorn’s horse, Roherine.
“You slept late Master Elf.” Aragorn said smiling. “I had to get my wound checked.” Legolas said quietly to Aragorn. “Are you in fighting condition?” Aragorn said riding high. “Yes.” Legolas said with a smile. “Even if I were lame I would have been here by your side.” Legolas looked on ahead.

In the shadows of the trees the evil Uruk-Hai hid awaiting the approach of the army.
“What did you see?” Asked the rugged voice half growling. “We see an elfsies.” Said the slimy green creature. “And why did you follow him?” Asked the Uruk-Hai named Sanariosh. “Them was that little Elfie that’s we sees two suns ago.’ The creature said pulling what little hair it had from it’s head. “So it is that King, we will finish him then Mirkwood will be ours.” Sanariosh sniggered wickedly.

Legolas rode ahead his elf senses alert his eyes traveled through each bush and tree for about twenty mils in each direction. Legolas trotted even more ahead of the group his eyes straining to see further. Legolas knew that if he saw anything he was to give the signal to Aragorn.
“Tiro!” Legolas cried to Aragorn in a worried tone.
Aragorn came forward, “What Legolas?” he asked quietly. “Wargs and their riders approach about ten miles from here. “Wargs!” Gimli smirked in happiness “Finally my axe will taste blood.” He patted the axe gently.
The army rode slower now. They thought they knew the approaching danger.
Finally Legolas noticed tracks; below his were a large amount of tracks but not horseshoes. “Daro!” He cried out to Aragorn. “Stop!” Aragorn shouted back to the rest of the troop. Legolas hopped down from his horse and bent down closer to the ground. He put his ear to the earth and listened carefully. His one finger pointed in a quiet signal. He looked up again to see that the tracks went off into the bushes and some went forward. He finally realized what was going on.
“Ambush! It is a ambush!” He called out in a terrified voice. He jumped back onto the horses back as Uruk-Hai and orcs jumped out of the bushes and trees.
All the soldiers grabbed their weapons and the entire enemy grabbed their weapons. Something Legolas had failed to notice was that went the other way to into the desert. Soon the wargs and their riders approached they were the equivalent of horses but much more grotesque.
Both armies charged into a fierce battle. The wargs bit at the horses and the horses bucked viciously at the evil wolves. The whole field was a graveyard; Bodies of dieing or dead men, horses, wargs, Uruk-Hai, and orcs were lying out on the ground being trampled on by other Uruk-Hai. Blood stained the ground as the enemies fought on.
“Gurth a choth in edhil!” Legolas cried in the madness of battle.
Aragorn was being overwhelmed by orcs when Legolas came to his rescue. He used his knives and slashed threw their backs then hit them on the head. ” Hannad!” Aragorn nodded his head to Legolas. “Tis nothing my friend.” Legolas said stabbing another orc who came right behind him.
Gimli had been having no problems whatsoever; he was killing every orc, Uruk-Hai, and warg rider that came within his axes reach.
A warg charged at Gimli and jumped on the unsuspecting dwarf. He struggled to get free but could not, then with a mighty leap Legolas and Aragorn jumped on the wargs back and thrust their swords in The warg fell to the ground with a loud thump and they pulled Gimli out from under the body. “That is pay back my friend for this yesterday morning.” Legolas called to Gimli as he fought on.
“Gimli, I now have slain five.” Legolas called to his friend. “What I did not know?” Gimli said confused. “Better catch up.” Legolas taunted.
Gimli slashed even harder and more now as he worked his way threw the bodies to Legolas. “Got ten.” Gimli laughed, “No, I am on fourteen.” Legolas said smiling.
Gimli hewed the head off one and slashed threw the body of another his eyes in a rage. “Ah, twenty beat that elf.” Gimli said wiping his brow. ” I already have.” Legolas said as he stabbed one through the head and pulled his knife back out.
“You are cheatin.” Gimli said in surprise. “My kin don’t cheat.” Legolas laughed.

Just when all was going good they heard a large bellow from the east. Legolas turned to see a huge troll being led by orcs. “No!” Legolas said backing away. “What is it?” Gimli asked harshly. “A troll, they have a troll.” Legolas yelled above the sound of swords. “We stay. We all fight even to the death if we must.” Aragorn cried out above the noise.

Just as the mountain troll approached Legolas drew out his Lorien bow and knocked an arrow on it. He stood silent waiting for it to approach even closer, Gimli kept watch over him making sure no scum tried to attack his friend.
Legolas aimed as it came closer then he quickly let go of the arrow. It flew into the troll’s chest. Legolas knocked another arrow quickly and aimed for the throat. The troll swung it enormous club to and fro killing many of the men and enemy as they tried to duck for cover or swing at the beast. The troll stepped carelessly on men as it made it’s way towards the elf that had shot him. Legolas let go of the arrow again and it lodged into the beast’s neck. The troll swayed as it did an orc hit Legolas down to the ground he lay there for a moment then he saw where he was and staggered to rise. As he did the troll fell down upon Legolas.
“Noooooo!” Aragorn cried as he killed orcs to make his way to the troll. Gimli had seen it also and was running to the spot.
Aragorn pushed as hard as he could to lift the troll but of course he could not.

Gondor had won the battle; the remaining scum retreated and went off east.
Aragorn got his men to find some timber and to haul the mountain troll carcass off Legolas. They found the perfect piece and slid it under the troll. The men pushed with all their might and as they did the carcass lifted just enough for Gimli to run underneath and drag the elf’s broken body away from the mountain troll’s body.
Legolas was unconscious and they did not know what all was broken but they brought him back on a stretcher they tied it to one of the remaining horses. Gimli sat beside Legolas and tried to clean the dirt and blood from his face and body.
Aragorn dropped back to see how he was doing: “How is he?” He asked Gimli
“Well he has not awakened yet if that is what you mean.” Gimli said snapped. “Gimli, I am sorry. He is my friend too.” Aragorn said wearily.
“Yes I know I am sorry Aragorn.” Gimli said in a low voice then went back to cleaning Legolas off. Aragorn smiled faintly and rode further up the ranks.

As they approached Minas Tirith there was a crowd waiting they cheered and applauded as the men rode in.
Aragorn did not go back to the palace first he helped the healers get his friend inside the houses of healing. Gimli carried Legolas’s head and some men carried him by his legs and arms.
As they went in the woman from the night before was there, she saw them carry the body in but she did not recognize who it was until later.
They set him gently down on a bed and all left but Gimli and Aragorn, they stayed to make sure their friend was all right.

When the healer came in he saw Aragorn there and he bowed down low, “What happened” The healer said in awe at the elf. “A troll fell on him after he shot an arrow in it’s neck.” Aragorn explained quickly.
“What is his name?” asked the healer. “Legolas son of Thranduil.” Gimli said wiping a tear from his eye.
The nurse had been going by when she heard that name. “What the same Legolas that I helped last night?” Aragorn and Gimli turned their glance to the woman. “Yes, I think so Mam.” Gimli said not knowing what else to say. “No he must live.” She cried out. “Why? He has just lost the one he loved do you not think it would be better for him to just die?” Aragorn asked. “No your Majesty.” The woman said bowing.
“But a elf maiden came in today after you all left. She described the same story to me as he did.” The woman said wiping happy tears from her eyes.
“What?” Aragorn asked confused.
“Her name she said was Aerlinn.” The woman said.
“Take me to this maiden.” He commanded.
She led him to the wall were a beautiful elf maiden stood, her blonde hair blowing softly in the breeze. She turned to see Aragorn standing looking at her. She had
a bandage around her middle that was covered by a long white dress.
“Oh Dunedain!” She cried out as she ran to greet him. He hugged her gently and gave her a soft kiss on the cheek. “I thought you were dead.” He said still in shock.
“No, I pretended so they would forget me although the cut in the back is real.” She said still hugging him. “Oh but I am afraid Legolas did not make it. I am sorry.” She started to cry tears flowing down her soft cheeks. “No, he lived. Just yesterday he came to me crying saying that you were dead.” Aragorn said tears of happiness spilling down his cheeks. “Were is he?” She cried out looking around but she could not see him. “Follow me.” Aragorn said sadly. He took her hand and they walked down the hall to the room were Legolas was being kept.
Aerlinn ran over to his side and starting to weep. “Im Meleth Legolas.” She sobbed as she kissed his hand. She caressed his brow and kissed it gently. “Oh Legolas, please wake up.” She cried out tears falling down her cheeks. “Don’t leave me here all alone.” She cried and tears fell on his muddy hand.
Aragorn sat down beside her and hugged her gently. “He will be fine.” Aragorn said confidently. “How do you know?” She asked him. “If I know Legolas he will fight to live.” Aragorn said taking her hand in his own.
“He should be the most honored one that fought.” Aragorn said proudly. “He was the one who killed the troll. If not for him, we would all be dead.” He went over beside Gimli and said: “I must go and let my family know I am safe, I will be back shortly.” Then he left the room and Gimli went timidly over to Aerlinn’s side. “Um, if it is any help, Thank You for letting me and Legolas be friends.” Gimli said looking at her and nodding his head.
Gimli went back and sat down. He watched as Aerlinn cried out to Legolas. The healer finally finished and told them that there is a forty percent chance he would live. Then he left without another word.
Aragorn returned shortly after with Legolas’s other things he gave them to Aerlinn and sat down on the other side of the bed. “Let me see what I can do.” Aragorn said impatiently. He walked down the hall and went to the healer and asked for athelas, some solunine, and some kinswell herb. “Here you are.” Aid the healer handing Aragorn all the herbs. Aragorn went back down the hall and asked the nurse for a pot filled with water and told her to boil it. She did as she was told not wanting to disobey her king.

Later she brought the water and gave it to Aragorn. He mixed the herbs in the pot and then took a washcloth and bathed were he saw any cuts, bruises, and spots were the healer had said the bones were broken.

Legolas’s eyes fluttered open, he grabbed painfully for his head but then found that it hurt to move his arm. “Ohhhh!” he groaned. “Oh Legolas, Aerlinn hugged him and kissed him. “Aerlinn!” Legolas was fully awake now he hugged her even though it hurt and he kissed her cheek. “Oh Aerlinn, I thought you were dead.” He said still in a state of shock. Finally realizing it hurt to move he lay back gently. “Please don’t move Legolas.” Aragorn said happily. Aerlinn kissed him on the hand and stroked her hand through his still smooth hair.

Aragorn pulled back the blanket to reveal the scar that he had gotten earlier. It was now shaped like two interlocked hearts. “Look at this.” Aragorn said studying his friend’s scar and then tracing it over with his own finger. Aerlinn looked at it and quickly unwrapped the bandage about her middle; on her back the scar she had was shaped exactly the same. “Well I’ll be blown.” Gimli said in shock. ” I have never seen anything like that before in all my life.” The woman said looking at it in awe. Legolas and Aerlinn just smiled.

It had been a day since Legolas had woken up he was feeling better although he was still weak and of course his bones still hurt.
“Legolas stop squirming.” Aragorn commanded. “It hurts when you rub it on open wounds.” Legolas told him trying hard to get away. “Legolas you will never get any better.” Aragorn finally convinced him.
“I was up on the wall just a moment ago and you will not believe what I saw.” Gimli said as he ran into the room. “Oh what Gimli?” Legolas said in frustration. “A rider.”
Gimli jumped up. “Oh a rider was it.” Aragorn said suspiciously. “Gimli go watch and see who the rider is.” Aragorn said winking at him so Legolas could not see.
Aragorn finally put the medicine on and Legolas slid back down into the white silky blankets.

“Sorry it took so long for us to come!” Merry said. “It was dark last night and plus when Aragorn came we were asleep.”
“Merry it is always dark at night.” Aragorn said smiling. “What he meant is, we don’t like the dark.” Pippin said hitting Merry with his shoulder.
“So we heard that a troll fell on Legolas. Is he alive.” Merry asked looking at Aragorn. “Yes!” Legolas answered laughing. ” Legolas!” They both ran to him and jumped on him. “Oof.” Legolas groaned in agony. “You two are going to brake all my bones.” Legolas said rubbing their heads. “So where are you hurt?” “On the rib you are sitting on Pippin.” Legolas groaned. “Oh, sorry.” Pippin got off.
“Two of his ribs, a arm, a leg, and a shoulder.” Aragorn said as he removed Merry from Legolas. “Youch! You got it worse than I did!” Pippin exclaimed. “Well Pippin, part of your body landed in a ditch.” Aragorn said laughing. “Well yes! But it still hurt.” Pippin sat down. ” I am going to wait for the rider to approach call me if you need anything.” Gimli said as he walked out the door. “Now for the finishing touches.” Aragorn said looking back to Legolas.
Legolas pushed down the sheets to reveal his heart shaped scar. “Now be still!” Aragorn warned. Legolas sat still biting his lip and looking away. “Can’t watch.” Pippin and Merry covered their eyes. “Oh it is not that bad.” Aragorn said as he rubbed the medicine on. “All done my friend.” Aragorn stood and patted Legolas on the uninjured shoulder. Legolas smiled up at him. “Hannad!” he whispered. “Aerlinn insisted she bring you some food.” Aragorn said with a smile. “Should she really be walking about?” Legolas asked looking up at his friend. “Well she seems to be fine, so, I guess it is alright.” Aragorn shrugged.
“Hey, we are hungry too?” Merry said indignantly. “You can walk.” Aragorn laughed at them. “Not very well. We are old.” Pippin said as he put on a show for Aragorn trying to help Merry up then falling back down in his chair. “Well fine, I am sure Aerlinn will bring enough for you all.” Aragorn said smiling.
Pippin and Merry winked happily at each other.

As the sun went higher up in the sky a radiant white horse approached the large wood gate of Minas Tirith. It let out a neigh of exertion then reared up on its hind legs. “Daro, Daro! The hooded rider patted the horse on the back and leapt down, then grabbed a little boy from the saddle and ser him on the ground gently saying: “Aphodo nin!”
The little one did as he was told and followed the rider to the gate.
“Who goes there?” called an elderly man from the other side of the gate. “Glorfindel, Lord of Rivendell.” answered the elf. “And I bring with me the Prince of Mirkwood.” The elf added. “Oh sir, please come in.” The man said as the gate was gently opened. “Hannad, friend.” Glorfindel said as he led his horse in and Melthenlass followed. “May we take your horse sir?” Asked some men.
Glorfindel gave the reigns to the men and walked off in the direction of the houses of healing as he held Melthenlass’s hand tightly.

Legolas laid back to rest and closed his eyes as Pippin and Merry watched him and whispered back and forth. They soon turned their attention to a tray of food that was being carried by Aerlinn. She approached without making a sound her feet gliding on the marble floor.
She walked over to the bed and said softly: “Legolas, are you hungry dear?” She kissed him gently on his bandaged head. Legolas opened his eyes slowly and tried to sit up but all his strength left him and he lay back down. “Here let me help.” Aerlinn said sitting down. She grabbed a spoon and lifted a small portion in it and the put it in his mouth gently, he chewed it slowly then swallowed.
After Legolas had eaten his fill, Aerlinn gave the two hobbits the rest. “Thanks you Mam.” They said unanimously as they ate. “Your welcome.” She laughed.
“And how are you feeling my dear?” She asked Legolas. “Better.” He answered kissing her on the cheek. “Good!” She said putting a strand of misplaced hair behind his ear.
Rat it tat tat! A knock came from the other side of the beautifully carven oak door.
“Who is it?” Aerlinn called in a mellow voice. The door swung gently open and Marienan (The nurse.) put her head through. “A man and a small child are here to see Master Legolas.” She said opening the door wider.
The door burst open and a small elf ran through excitedly. “Ada, Naneth!” the little child cried happily. “Oh, Melthenlass!” Aerlinn put her hand over her mouth and ran to her son tears of joy now running down her soft cheeks. She ran to her son picking him up in her arms and squeezing him tight. “What is wrong with Ada?” The small elf said looking curiously at his father. “Ada got a booboo.” She said carrying the child over to Legolas. She set him down on the bed and he crawled towards his father. “Suilad Melthenlass.” Legolas said hugging his son gently with his uninjured arm.
“What have you been up to?” Legolas said wiping mud away from Melthenlass’s cheek.
“Glorfindel gave me a ride here on Markani!” Melthenlass said excitedly. “Oh! Wow!”
Legolas smirked at Glorfindel who had now removed his cloak and came over to Legolas. “Ai, what happened to you?” Glorfindel said sitting down in a chair beside the bed. “I shot down a mountain troll.” Legolas said hoping not to have to repeat his mistake. “And just cause you shot it your body suddenly broke?” Glorfindel said laughing. “Then it fell on me.” Legolas mumbled. “Oh well those things happen. I am just glad to see you alive and in one piece.” Glorfindel shifted his eyes down Legolas’s whole body. “Ada! Uncle Glorfindel taught me how to swim.” Melthenlass shouted above the commotion. “Wow, that is wonderful.” Legolas said hugging his son tight. “Aerlinn did you hear that, he can swim.” Legolas called to his wife. “That is wonderful.” She said picking up Melthenlass.
“Now lets let Ada sleep a bit.” Aerlinn carried Melthenlass out the door as she waved to Legolas. “It was nice seeing you Legolas.” Glorfindel stifled a yawn. “Now I think I will rest also.” “Glorfindel!” Legolas had to ask one more question. “Yes?” Glorfindel turned around. “How did you know I was here and not in Mirkwood?” Legolas asked curiously. “Something told me to come here instead of go to Mirkwood.” Glorfindel shrugged. “That is a gift. If you would have gone to Mirkwood you would have been killed.” Legolas said happily. “Mirkwood was under attack.” Legolas explained. “Well I am glad I went with my heart and not my brain or I might have been in the room right across from you.” Glorfindel smiled and turned to go out the door.
Legolas slid back down into the soft white silky covers and closed his tired eyes. He laid his head back on the pillow and fell fast asleep the sound of leaves rustling on the ground and people walking down the marble floored hall. The birds chirped happily outside his open window and rays of sun came through like yellow streamers.
As he slept the sun went down and hit the rim of the hills.

He slept soundly till he was awoken by a small voice: “Ada! Ada!” He awoke at the sound of his little boy in trouble. “Ada! Ada come quickly yelled his small son who ran into the room. “I’m coming Melthenlass!” He called to his son.
He pushed down the white covers and got out of bed but he noticed he was not in The Houses of Healing. He was in his house in Mirkwood. He paid no heed to it and ran to meet his son. “Ada orcies out there.” Melthenlass whispered to his father. “Here you go get them.” He gave his son his knives to his son who was now taller than he had been before.
“I killed them father.” Said a boy returning who now seemed to be about the age of thirteen. “But I saw more coming.” Go get them.” Legolas said as he handed his son his Loth Lorien bow. “Yes father.” The young elf seemed to be about twenty now.
He returned and handed the enemies weapons to his father “I defeated our foes father.” he said smiling. “Now you are ready.” Legolas said in a happy voice.

A pressure on his stomach awakened Legolas. “Oohh!” He groaned. “What is going on?” He said as he raised his head. He saw his son jumping on his stomach.
“Oohh, Melthenlass get off!” Legolas said as he tried to grab the little elf with one hand. “Melthenlass, go bother Naneth.” Legolas convinced the little elf. He stopped jumping and hugged his father. “But Naneth said to wake you up.” Melthenlass said.
“And nothing else was working so I had to jump on you.” he said starting to cry.
“Oh No, don’t cry I am sorry I didn’t know.” Legolas hugged his crying son.

Legolas hugged his son till he stopped crying and then sat him down on the bed. “What have you been up to?” Legolas tried to get his son’s mind off the incident.
“Uncle Gimli and Aragorn were telling me and Eldarion stories of your journeys.”
Melthenlass said excitedly. “Oh and what did they tell you about?” Legolas said wiping a lonely tear from his son’s cheek. “About the battle at Helms Deep.” Melthenlass said Happily. “Uncle Gimli said he won the contest.” The little elf continued. “Well he did but that was because everyone was swinging at were his head would be if he was not a dwarf.” Legolas laughed, Melthenlass giggled.
“What is sooo funny?” Gimli said as he walked in the room. “Nothing!” Legolas and Melthenlass said unanimously. Legolas yawned and stretched gently. “How you feeling buddy?” Gimli asked stretching. “Well, fine except for that I cannot move very well.” Legolas said with a slight grin. “Oh of course. Well Aerlinn sent me up to ask if you were hungry.” Gimli picked Melthenlass up gently. “No, I want to stay with Ada.” Melthenlass screamed. “Let him be.” Legolas said. “Alright.” Gimli said sadly. “I will tell you another story later.” Gimli winked at the little elf. “Okey dokey uncle Gimli.”
Melthenlass said with a happy giggle. “Um yes I am a little.” Legolas said to Gimli. “Alright then.” Gimli said as he went out the door.

Five months later Legolas was up and about with only a small limp when he walked. He taught Melthenlass how to ride his horse and how to shoot arrows from his Loth Lorien bow. And use his knives.
“Very good Melthenlass.” Legolas said as he sat carelessly on the grass watching his son ride swiftly on the horse. Melthenlass was now ten and Legolas was completely healed.
Melthenlass hopped down from the horse and ran over to his father. “How was that Ada?” He called as he ran. “Perfect!” Legolas ran to his son and hugged him. “Now, remember what I told you?” Legolas asked his son. “Yes, always back away after you shoot a troll of any sort.” Melthenlass recited as he smiled. “Yes! You are ready.” Legolas rubbed his son’s head. “Aerlinn you should here him. He is doing so well.” Legolas hugged his son proudly.

That night he sat on the bank of the Anduin remembering times of long ago. He remembered Boromir flowing down the river, his body in an elven boat. All his memories came back as tears welled up in his eyes.
He looked to the sky for reassurance and saw but one lonely gull flying in the red sky, the sun was setting and as it did a gull cry pierced the silence. The words of Gladriel lingered in the air as he repeated them softly and quietly:

Legolas green leaf long under tree,
In joyhast lived, beware of the sea!
If thou Hearst cry of Gull on the shore,
Thy heart shall rest in the forest no more.

He said the last words again. “Thy heart shall rest in the forest no more.” Tears dripped to the ground. Without turning his head he saw his son walking towards him slowly. “What are you doing Ada?” The young elf asked as he sat down next to his father. “Reminiscing.” Legolas answered hugging his son with one arm. “Naneth says to come back to Minas Tirith, dinner is ready.” Melthenlass stood up and held out a hand to his father. Legolas stood up with the help of his young son. They walked quietly back to Minas Tirith and went to the palace where Gimli was trying to help with the dinner.
When they arrived Aerlinn left Gimli and kissed then both on brow. “Aerlinn!” Gimli’s panicked voice rang out. “I think something went wrong.” Gimli ran into the room food all over his face. “Gimli! What happened?” Aerlinn said taking an apron and wiping his messy face. “Well I think the fire was too hot.” Gimli said.
They went into the kitchen to see food all over the walls and the fire was out on account that the soup had spilled all over the fire. “Oh Gimli!” They laughed as they all grabbed rags to clean it up.

After Dinner Aragorn came to Legolas. “Legolas, I am old.” Aragorn’s voice sounded soft and raspy. “I give you this before I die.” He handed Legolas a beautiful
Bow. “Aragorn this is yours.” Legolas burst out in anger. “I cannot receive it.” “It is not for you Legolas, It is for your son.” Aragorn pushed the bow and quiver back at Legolas. “But.” Legolas was interrupted. “My son got one for his birthday and I have no more use for it.” Aragorn said with a sigh. “Please just take it to him.” Aragorn said through tears. “I don’t feel strong enough to live any longer.” He answered Legolas’s question before he even said it. “Take care of yourself Legolas and take care of Gimli.” Aragorn hugged his friend. “And tell Melthenlass that he will make a great king.” Aragorn patted Legolas on the back. He then held out his hand, it had something in it. It was a book. “I had my scribe write this book for you and Gimli. It includes all of our adventures together including the most recent ones. Take it with you to The West.” Aragorn touched the book’s blue cover one last time. “Go get Gimli, tell him I wish to see him a moment.” Aragorn wiped the tears from his cheeks.
Legolas went back to the room and gave his son the bow and quiver then told Gimli to go see Aragorn. “Alright.” Gimli said looking at Legolas for reassurance.

Legolas went on a walk he was bursting with rage as he kicked at the hard ground. Again he heard the piercing cry of the gull ringing in his ears. “Be quiet beasts!” He shouted as they flew overhead. “I do not want to leave.” Legolas suddenly stopped as if there was a wall. He looked straight ahead and saw Gimli and Aragorn. Gimli fell to his knees and was helped back up by Aragorn. Legolas ran the other way tears going from his chin to the ground he wanted no more to hear the gulls piercing cry, he knew where he must go but he wanted not to leave Gimli behind. He did not want to leave his son alone.

Aerlinn was finished the kitchen was clean and Melthenlass was asleep in his bed, his new quiver and bow polished and leaning against the bedside table.
Legolas burst in the room and started Aerlinn. She let out a sigh of relief when she saw it was only Legolas.
“Where have you been?” She asked kissing him on the cheek. “You are freezing.” She said worriedly. “I am fine dear.” He said kissing her back. ” I need to speak with Gimli has he returned yet?” Legolas asked looking around. “Yes he is in the back room,” she said.

“Gimli.” Legolas said as he entered the room. “I heard the gulls cry tonight.” He told Gimli. Gimli ran to his friend. “No don’t you leave me too?” Gimli hugged his friend’s middle. “No Gimli. You are coming too.” Legolas said happily. “How can I come, only special people get to go.” Gimli said still hugging Legolas. “Gimli you are a special person. You saved me from certain death and you helped Frodo escape many perils. You are special. You will come with me and Aerlinn.” Legolas bent down to hug his friend. “You are in love with The Lady Galadriel too, and she will say that you belong and Gandalf can’t turn you down.” Legolas said smirking. “Well when do we go?” Gimli smiled and hugged his friend tight.

Legolas brought his son back to Mirkwood and then helped the remaining elves rebuild Mirkwood. Then he returned to Minas Tirith and was told of Aragorn’s death and the two halfling’s death also. “They are to be laid beside The King,” said a handmaiden. “We must go. Have our horses ready.” Legolas ordered. “Very well Master Elf.” The handmaiden said as she left.

The three travelers had said their goodbyes and jumped on their horses. Legolas led them towards the sea. Aerlinn saw the gulls following them as they rode. They rode as fast as they could to the shore where Legolas built a small gray ship and they sailed over to the Havens were they were greeted by all their friends and lived happily there forever and ever.

Melthenlass ruled the land of Mirkwood wisely until it came when the wood elves also heard the cries of the gulls ringing in their ears and so they left Middle Earth never to return to it’s distant shores.

Eldarion ruled Minas Tirith for more years than anyone could count he married happily to a woman name Arthenilian. They had a son and named him Leimlos, which was a cross between Gimli and Legolas. After his father died he became king and was also a great ruler.

And so the last of the fellowship left Middle Earth to see it no more.

Authors note: If you were wondering the creature in the bushes that kept calling Legolas Elfie and that had followed him the night before was none other than Gollum. After he fell in He climbed back up on a root but he had lost the Ring. He went back to Mordor and asked the new ruler for a job. She made him a spy; he was not killed and still lived after Legolas, Aerlinn, and Gimli left for the havens.
