I feel the desperation
In your arms as you hold me;
And I know that you are holding on
To more than just my body-

You are clinging to all that I once was,
You are trying to keep me whole;
Trying to hold close forever
The fading essence of my soul.

You tried so hard, beloved;
But I fear you tried in vain.
The evil that could not kill my body
Has been my spirit’s bane.

I must leave you, my heart;
And this parting must be long;
For I diminish, and I will not stay
To make my suffering your own.

So let me go, with no more words
Save the sound of my name on your lips;
Let me go, with no more embraces
Save a final tortured kiss.

Surely beyond these dark lands,
Beyond these days of confusion and pain,
Somewhere beneath a kinder sky
I shall see your face again.
