They told me it would be all right
Then left me on the watch all night
I stood atop a cold, hard wall
To wait for the enemy horn-call.

They told me the battle wouldn’t last long
Soon it’d be over, for right or wrong
But then it dragged on and on
‘Till the night was almost gone.

They told me at dawn, death would come
But by the dawn, I was numb
With cold and fear my feeling gone
I never saw the battle won.
