Trapped in Seasons

Roots fall down the mountainside,
And drink from the silver water,
To cling to the dirt, that clings to the earth
With leaves that reach for the sky.

Leaves without roots fly away
With ripples to disturb the Sea;
Roots without leaves, would never see
The threshold of the bays.

But even leaves are bound to Change;
Even roots are bound to Death.
Seasons wear them for a year,
Alike a sunset for a day.

Branches heavy with Pain and Grief
Beg the roots to “let one go”
But the roots, weary with Love and Loss,
Still cling to the yellow leaf.

Then in autumn, the weary Tree
Slid down the mountainside;
The roots ended at its touch
But the leaf had found the Sea.

Then winter’s wind chilled the cries
That the earth had felt by the roots,
Who wept as they crept uphill, to heal
Their sorrows, and say good-bye.

But the leaf had felt himself at home,
Released from the seasons that brought him age
And beyond all tears, though he knew,
He had left his love alone.

Interpretation:
The yellow leaf is symbolic of Frodo and his flight to the Sea
The roots are symbolic of Sam who loves his friend and would never, of his own will,
Let go of him.
And even still, they cling to their memories.
