Post A-stems with '-ya' in future tense?
on: December 13, 2003 02:02
For I had checked a little poem here, there was one question that I could not let go of: what happens to A-stem verbs, ending in '-ya' in the future tense? Someone pointed me to that.
Would a verb like 'harya-' become 'haryuva' or 'haruva'?

I really have no idea. Anyone does?

That's a very good question. I drop the -ya because for most of the tenses they drop the -ya, but I may be wrong.

According to the common theory, it should be *haryuva (though AFAIR so far we can't be 100% sure if the future doesn't have a direct tie with the past [looking at enquaNTuva], and thusly, if the future tense of a verb like lelya- would be ?lelyuva, or perhaps ?lenduva instead... but so far the "present" stem is seen as safer, I understand).

I'd go for "haryuva". The "-ya" isn't dropped in all tenses, and not for all verbs. Only intransitive verbs seems to lose it in the past tense.

The Perfect Tense and Intransitive Verbs in the Past Tense drop the -ya before adding the ending. But from a phonological point of view, I see no reason why the future tense would do likewise.
