Post Character Maps for Tengwar?
on: January 30, 2004 05:15
Aiya.

I hope someone can help me with this, because I'm slowly tearing my hair out. In advance, I'm very sorry if this has been covered or mentioned before, but I have had a look before I posted, and couldn't find anything.

So.... I've scoured this site, and I'm probably blind, stupid or both, but NOWHERE can I find a good reference in order to type Tengwar on a standard keyboard. I can find a character map for Sindarin, but not for Quenya.

I know of all the other ways to find what you need, such as the Programmes -> Accessories -> Character Map, path, but it's really not working for me. It's just taken me about 20 minutes to type my name, by sheer guesswork. *facepalms* And for some odd reason, the feature where one uses ALT+(insert number here) isn't working for me. :dizzy:

The main thing I'm having trouble finding are the two 'carrier symbols' for which to place tehtar (vowel markers) on, but I'm generally finding it quite taxing as a whole.

If anyone knows of a link with a good table, showing where the various symbols are on a keyboard, I'd be VERY grateful.

Thanks.

Download the fonts, and they come with Acrobat Reader files that have excellent key maps for BOTH Quenya and Sindarin.

Unfortunately, I cannot download the fonts from that site. I have tried and tried, and for some reason the download stops about 75% of the way through. So, obviously, the file won't unzip, because it's not complete. If anyone had any way of sending me the pdf files, via e-mail if possible, I would be very grateful.

you could also download the Tengwar Scribe that translates texts, so you don't have to go crazy with that writing. handy. though I've had to check the translations every time (especially if not writing elvish), but I don't really mind.

As far as the ALT+(insert number here) problem goes, you need to make sure that Num Lock is on and that you are using the numbers at the right of the keyboard and not the ones across the top.

This is where I got my Tengwar fonts from, as well as instructions for use, and a very nifty little Word macro that adds a kind of "Tengwar chart" that allows you to just click on the letter corresponding to the tengwa / tehta needed.
