from TTT chapter X! the Palantir
'Nazgûl!' he cried. 'The messenger of Mordor. the storm is coming. The Nazgûl have crossed the River! Ride, ride! Wai6t not for the dawn! let not the swift wait for the slow! Ride'

Why is it such a 'Big Deal' to have the Nazgûl cross the Anduin now?
It's not like they'd never crossed before. They had harried the hobbits all the way from the Shire almost to Rivendell on the west side of the Anduin and, many years ago, the kingdom of Arnor was destroyed by forces led by the Witch-King-, Chief of the Nazgûl. What is the significance of them crossing the Anduin once again?

Maybe it's mainly because it's 'wraiths on wings'? Plus, most people know by now that Sauron is up to something - I guess they probably panic when they see his servants come so close.

perhaps it was because gandalf when he saw the nazgul realised that time was shorter than he thought for help to reach gondor, as the battle of helm's deep had just been fought (and almost lost) and pippin had been found with the palantir it would seem likely that sauron would have many more soldiers than saruman, the people of gondor may have already been attacked, as sauron seeing pippin may believe that he would be holding up the destruction of the ring by making the the ring bearer go to gondor believing that pippin has the ring

hope this makes sense

I think Janora's on the right track: Pippin's just been 'seen' by Sauron and he's sent a Nazgul to fetch the Ring (he thinks) from his puppet wizard. Can his armies be far behind?

Plus, thinking again: the fact that they had crossed the River before wasn't forgotton - a terror remembered can create huge legends!
