From TTT The Taming of Smêagol
'Smêagol will swear never, never, to let Him have it. Never ! Smêagol will save it. but he must swear on the Precious "

'We promises, yes I promise!' said Gollum. 'I will serve the master of the precious.......

Promises and giving your word are very important in Middle-Earth and it is a rare creature that would fail to live up to a promise freely given. But---- It seems to me that Gollum's promise leaves him a lot of 'wiggle-room' so that he can obey it and still get what he desires.

Gollum *does* leave himself wiggle room, absolutely. He was far more clever than most people thought. I think that his plan all along was to regain the Ring, and then the master of the Precious whom he would have to serve would be himself. In this way he would not have broken his oath.

It is interesting to compare with the Gollum-Bilbo promise,
At the riddle game. Did Gollum intend to keep his word then?

I think he does intend to keep his word, to keep his precious safe... from Him.

What I like about this is that Sméagol swears on the precious, not Gollum.
