Post Deriving adjectives from nouns (how?)
on: September 05, 2004 05:31
Hi there

Fairly recently I posted this in the "Adjective Game Singular/Plural" thread.

Quote
__________________________________________________

quildë elda - quiet elf

quildi eldar - quiet elves

quildi eldu - a pair of quiet elves
__________________________________________________

unfortunately I was in error(read dead wrong lol) (though the mistake innocently enough made (but thats another story ))

Mal put me back on the right path with this post (thanks Mal )

quote
__________________________________________________

"quildë" is a noun, so unfortunately it cannot be used in the phrase "a quiet elf". (though if it were an adjective, the plural form would be correct!)
__________________________________________________

Anyway the gist of this post is to ask if there is a way to make adjectives from nouns. I realise this would be conjugation and not "pure Tolkien", I am nevertheless most interested in your opinions. I have searched for information on this but either I am not looking in the right places or I'm missing it somehow (probably the latter ).

Thanks in advance for you help.

Namárië

You could consult the excellent article of Fauskanger at his Ardalambion site named Quenya Affixes:
http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/affix~1.htm

There are so many possibilities that it's hardly practical to repeat them here, and Fauskanger's document is very readible.

Hantanyel dirk_math

Thanks for the information and link, I have been to Ardalambion many times but for some reason I had not read that particular section. I think perhaps I did not associate the word affixes with prefixes and suffixes.

Now I have read the article twice, though I still havent found exactly what I seek . I will re-read . I still don't really understand how to turn the noun _ quildë_ (quiet) into an adjective, oh well I will persevere.

When there is no additional meaning implied, it is very easy because quildë is a word on -ë. In this case the adjective is simply quildëa.

Hantanyel very much dirk_math for your kindness .

Lets see if I have this straight

quildëa elda (a quiet elf)

quildië eldar (quiet elves)

quildië eldu (a pair of quiet elves)

Have I correctly pluralized _quildëa_ ?

thanks again namárië
