a question: is there a way to indicate that a vowel sound is long? if not, how are you supposed to know the difference?

thanks so much

Yes, you place the vowel marker above a Long carrier, which looks like a cross between an l and a j, (i would show you but i can't get the Tengwar installed on my computer!!)
Another way is to place the particular vowel marker on top of a consonant twice, or use a short carrier (an i without the dot) and place the vowel marker on the short carrier twice. hope that helps. And I hope I'm right

The long carrier symbol can be written on the computer using ~ in the tengwar fonts.
