Post LotR: The Musical (Parody) ???
on: January 14, 2005 09:42
Just a thought.... has anyone actually considered writing a musical parody of LotR??? I have, and I want to write it but I don't know if it would be any good. I've got quite a few crazy random ideas (I can't remember most of them) and I was just wondering if maybe someone would like to help me out by giving me some more ideas, or maybe even co-writing it with me. How about it? Any takers?

Edited thread title to differentiate between two existing threads: this thread - idea of a musical parody, other thread - the actual LotR Musical

That's great idea... do you plan to write original music for it or write lotr lyrics for songs you know?

Well, all the ideas I had in mind were to lotr-ify songs I know. I'm not good at writing songs.

Do you intend to make it serious or with a bit of humor? Do you have any ideas for it yet? I'm very curious!

I was planning on making it mainly humorous, but with a bit of seriousness. I have a few ideas already, and I'm open to any suggestions you may have. One thing I was considering was having Frodo and/or Sam sing in Mount Doom either "Never Let Go" or "Let Me Fall" by Josh Groban, or maybe even both. They both would kind of fit the scenario. Do you have any ideas? I'd love to hear them!

I once worked with some friends on a musical using existing tunes, like you plan to do. (On the Bibilical story of Abraham and Isaac) We found that the best way to write it was to get together & play our guitars and actually sing the stuff. That way you get a feel of how it will sound onstage.

That sounds cool, except I can't play a guitar, or any other instrument for that matter. I can sing, though. I like to sing.

How about Aragorn and Arwen re-enacting Summer Lovin' from Grease

Or Gollum singing I Fell Into a Burning Ring of Fire :rolling:

I've never really heard of those songs. Oh, wait -- I've heard of Summer Lovin'. I had to sing it in choir at school. Boy, was it boring! We sang it at pretty much every choir session. Ergh! (No offense meant, if you like that song.) I'm just not a huge fan of movies like Grease. Troy and Van Helsing (and of course LotR) are more my style. Yay for Orli Bloom and David Wenham!

If you don't play an instrument, you can always team up with someone who does! Preferably someone who has the same taste in music as you do, and who knows enough music theory to work out the accompaniments & transpose the keys to suit your voices.

Well, my mom plays the guitar, but she's not really into LotR (and she says she couldn't sing to save her life!). But she does like Josh Groban, and a few other singers I do, like Enya and Loreena McKennitt. Maybe I should ask her...

Thanks, I will! I appreciate your support. All your good luck may rub off! I'll try to keep you posted whenever I get a new idea. So far, all I know for sure is that Frodo and/or Sam are going to sing in Mount Doom, and... well, that. Should the Fellowship sing as they set out from Rivendell? Maybe "I'm On My Way" or something similar. *snicker* Crazy random thought -- all the Ents of Fangorn, singing as they march to Orthanc. "The Ents go marching 1 by 1, haroom, haroom..." I know, it's silly, and probably has been done before. But hey, I'm in the middle of writer's block. Curse it... curse it, the nasssty writer's block! We hates it, Precious, yes we does! Wicked and tricksy it is! *Gollum, Gollum* (Yes, I'm insane.....)

Heehee! I just came up with a scene idea for the story. The Fellowship prepares to take their leave:

Elrond: Well, here you are, setting out on a quest into the unknown to do the impossible. It'll be long, and hard, and may just cost you all your lives. Good luck! *under his breath* You'll need it.

Legolas: *hearing him easily* Was that sarcasm?

Aragorn: *to Legolas* Shut up.

Elrond: I beg your pardon?

Aragorn: No, not you. Him.

Elrond: Which 'him'? Do you see any girls here?

Arwen: Hey!

Elrond: Sorry. But are you just going to stand here yapping, or get going to Mordor? We're on a tight schedule here.

Aragorn: Right, yeah. Bye, hon! *kisses Arwen on the cheek* I'll be back, don't you worry! *starts singing* I will survive, I will survive...

Elrond: *rolls eyes* All right, Aragorn...

Aragorn: *still singing* ...'Cause as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive...

Rest of Fellowship: ALL RIGHT, ARAGORN!!!

Aragorn: Right. Yeah. Come on, guys...

*They leave. As they disappear into the gloom, Pippin's voice is heard singing.*

Pippin: I'm on my way, from Rivendell to who-knows-where today... Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh... I'm on my way...

Elrond: We're all gonna die.

Hannon-le for the site, pv! It really helped! I have a new idea! This time, chaos reigns at the Council:

Sam: Mr. Frodo's not goin' anywhere without me!

Elrond: No indeed, it's hardly possible to separate you two, even when he is summoned to a secret Council and you are not. *sighs* Oh, very well.

Merry/Pippin: *pop up out of nowhere* Oi! We're coming too!

Elrond: *eyebrows of doom* Aaaaghh! *starts singing*

Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)

Well the Council was nice, the Council was jumping
and everybody havin' a ball
I tell the elves "stop the name calling”
but the dwarves report to the call
The Council showdown

Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)

I see ya' little Halflings join with our fling
they really want to leave town
Get back off me, get off me
Get back you mushroom-obsessed Halfling!

Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)

I'm gonna tell
to any elves calling them midgets
Tell the dwarves "Hey man, it’s part of the Council!"
You fetch an elf in front and a man behind
This Council showdown

Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)

Say, A Hobbit is nothing if he’s got no mushroom
Hobbits hold ya’ mushrooms, all Hobbits hold ‘em
A Hobbit is nothing if he’s got no mushroom
Hobbits hold ya’ mushrooms, all Hobbits hold ‘em

Wait for y'all people, the Council is on
I gotta get the hobbits outta here now
Do you see the rays comin' from my eyes
what could you be friend
That Gondor man that's breaking them down?

Me and my crazy eyebrows
And I can't control ‘em, anybody will do
I'm figuring that's why they call me evil
'Cause I'm the elf of the land
When they see me they do ah-ooooo (howl)

Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)
Who let the Hobbits in (who, who, who, who?)

Alright, more stuff, finally! Another Council scene. Merry and Pippin give Elrond an explanation of why they should be part of the Fellowship:

Merry, Pippin: Oi! We’re coming too!

Elrond: What?! Where did you come from?

Merry: You'll have to send us home tied up in a sack to stop us. And even that wouldn’t work!

Pippin: That’s right! You can’t keep us apart for long! We’re kindred spirits!

Elrond: Kindred spirits?

Pippin: Yes, sir! *singing* Kindred spirits, Merry and me, ever to be…

Merry: Kindred spirits – loyal and true…

Pippin: Truer than blue!

Both: All our lives through – we two!

Elrond: Er, well, that was nice. But do you really—

Merry: *singing* Like a fly sticks to glue…

Pippin: We’ll stick together, just me and you!

Merry: Just you and me!

Elrond: *cutting in and correcting their grammar* Just you and I!

Merry: *nodding* That’s how it must be, now we’re kindred spirits…

Pippin: Loyal and true!

Elrond: *humming* Like an old shoe...

Merry, Pippin: *to Elrond* All our lives through – you, too!

Elrond: Me, too?

Pippin: Yes, you!

Elrond: Really? I’m flattered. Now, if you could – please, Peregrin, Meri – ack! *Merry and Pippin grab him and start dancing around*

Merry: Kindred spirits – Lord Elrond and we, now we are three…

Pippin: Finding one loyal friend, may lead to other friends in the end!

Merry: So??? Can we go?

Elrond: Well, I guess I have no choice. You shall be the Fellowship of the Ring.

Pippin: Great! …Where are we going?

*Elrond smacks his forehead*

A song for Rohan...or Gandalf...or possibly Aragorn:-

My lovely horse running through the field
Where are you going with your fetlocks blowing in the wind
I want to shower you with sugar lumps and ride you over fences
Polish your hooves every single day and take you to the horse dentist
My lovely horse you're a pony no more
Riding around with the man on your back like a train in the night, like a train in the (hold on, I can get this)....night

When I heard that on Father Ted the other night, I just thought "Great horsey song for an LotR musical!"

More stuff! I thought this would be a good song for Sam to sing. I altered the lyrics just a tiny bit.

Walk away if you want to.
It's ok, if you need to.
Well, you can run, but you can never hide
From the shadow that's creepin' up beside you.

And, there's an evil runnin' through your soul,
But you can't have it all.
(Whatever you do)
Well, I’ll be two steps behind you
(Wherever you go)
And I’ll be there to remind you
That it only takes a minute of your precious time
To turn around, and I’ll be two steps behind.

Yeah, yeah.
Take the time to think about it.
Just walk the line, you know you just can't fight it
And take a look around, you'll see what you can't find,
Like the Eye that's always lookin’ for you.

Yeah, yeah.
Oh, yeah, Frodo.
Two steps behind
Oh, Frodo
Two steps behind.

(Frodo At first I was afraid - I waaaas petrified! Kept thinkin' I could never live without Sam by my side. And I spent so many days thinkin' how Smeagol did me wrong - and I grew strong... and I learned how to get alooong...

XD just some soundtrack ideas...

grr. okay just 2 let u know "i will survive" was my idea 4 Frodo b4 i read any of the rest of the thread...
and Denethor could sing "burnin ring of fire" maybe WITH gollum, like a duet...
and then there's that parody of "shine Jesus shine" in Celeborn's karaoke bar 4 Denethor...

(Arwen Think of me... think of me fondly when we've said goodbye.
Remember me... once in a while, please promise me you'll try.
When you find that once again you long to take your heart back and be free, if you ever find a moment, spare a thought for me....

Oh the show was abosolutly amazing. The crazist thing though all the elves had war paint. yes odd. But what i thought showed some courage was Legolas had black hair. I was pretty impressed that make-up would go aganist the bleached blonde orlando version. but it was awesome. it really took you to middle earth. the music was astounding and..i could go on all day so i better stop typing before i get carried away but if you can definitly go see it. it is worth every penny!
