 Hey ya. Has anyone seen House of Flying Daggers, yet? I've only seen it today because it recently came out in theatres for me (I know...it's sad). Meanwhile it's likely been out in the other parts of the world for some time, eh?

I personally, enjoyed this movie. I liked the battles scenes because they were a bit more realistic and down-to-Earth than Hero (but I love that movie for its aesthetic pleasure and artisticness). But what I really loved was the love story between Mei and Jin; he's just... and  It's a very intense story of love and betrayal. Oh, how people are driven my jealousy and their desires...

Anyone else enjoy this movie?

((BTW, the song played at the end of the song, which is called Lovers (Title Song)...does anyone have the lyrics? If you bought the soundtrack you would mind posting them for me? I'd be very grateful!))

I haven't seen it yet! It's terrible really. But unfortunatelly, it's out of the theaters here, so I'm going to have find it somewhere else. :banghead:

I just loved Hero. The colours, the fighting-scenes and the twists in the plot. Realy, blink twice and you have now idea what happend. :rolling:

Is it much like Hero? From what I hear about intriges and stuff, it sounds quite alike.

Oh I love these movies! Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon & Hero... Oh they were very good. I loved the use of color in Hero and I'd like to see it again. Sadly, I did not get a chance to see House of Flying Daggers, but I did so much look forward to it! Its not in theatres around here anymore either so I guess I'll wait for video.

I don't suppose anyone knows when its coming out on video in the US?

Well that depends how deep you want to go...
Both movies are directed by Zhang Yimou and cast Zhang Ziyi as one of the characters. The style of cinematography is also quite similar. Both settings take place in China during the "ancient times". But for storyline, I think they greatly differ. Hero is all about how Nameless "assasinated" the three great warriors of China.

This is an excerpt from comingsoon.net (I was too lazy to write out the plot...)

"House of Flying Daggers" is set in the year is 859AD as China's once flourishing Tang Dynasty is in decline. Unrest is raging throughout the land, and the corrupt government is locked in battle with rebel armies that are forming in protest. The largest, and most prestigious of these is the "House of Flying Daggers", which is growing ever more powerful under a mysterious new leader. Two local captains, Leo (Lau) and Jin (Kaneshiro) are ordered to capture the new leader and the two hatch an elaborate plan. Captain Jin will pretend to be a lone warrior called Wind and rescue the beautiful, blind revolutionary Mei (Ziyi), from prison, earning her trust and escorting her to the secret headquarters of the House of Flying Daggers. The plan works, but to their surprise, Jin and Mei fall deeply in love on their long journey to the House. Danger lurks in the forest surrounding them, and the wind is still, as if sensing the tension in the air. What lies ahead for Jin and Mei, these star-crossed lovers? If this is true love, then why are there plots in their heads, and secrets in their hearts?

Annûniel, the release date is supposed to be April 19th. I'd assume that's for North America. So it's not too far...

Hey! I had to dig a few pages back to find this thread... So the DVD of HoFD is out I finally got to see it. Even though there is nothing like watching movies like this on the big screen, this was just amazing! The story, the romance/drama, the action, the fights the scenry, the twists, the ending! UH! When the weather is changing and it snows and they keep fighting. And in the with Jin holding Mei and singing the Beauty Song!OMG! I was sobbing:cry:like hysterical to the point where I can barely breath and really its loud and my face is soaked sobbing! Which reminds me, HoFD had an amazing soundtrack! I so getting it!

I loved Jin,definitly my favorite character. He was so courageous and loving and was going to sacrifice himself for Mei and avenge her, and he was hot!

It was such a great movie...I just bummed that I wasn't able to see it in the theaters! Can you imagine see these films (Hero, Croughing Tiger..., etc) on a huge Imax screen?!

I just got this on DVD too and I love it! When did it come out in theaters in the US? I can't remember. I definately would have seen it there first if I knew about it. Anyhow, I've already watched it a few times and even brought it to work with me (the language lab a school). It was a great hit! All the students there at some point were watching it, even though only one of them was studying Chinese. Heh heh.. My favorite scene is the echo game. I love that part! And Mei's costume is so pretty.

I just saw this movie the other day and I decided I liked this style of movies the best mostly due to the fact that I can't predict them!

I don't know about anyone else but with a lot of movies or TV shows I already know how its going to end 10-15 minutes into the show!

The new and different culture is unpredictable... at least to me who is unfamilar with their culture... Its a *very* nice thing.

I will probably buy this, I really like it. It was again, tragic, but like Annûniel said, the unpredictability is refreshing. I need to get hero as well, but I will wait till I have more money. Does Deception seem to be a common theme with these films? Does anyone else see that?

TheLadyArwen, I believe it was released in December last year but not many people knew when or if it was going to be in theatres or not.

I don't think it was unpredictable, actually. It may be because I have an Oriental background, or because I take martial arts...either way, because of that I appreciate the artistry and culture of these kind of movies.

As I said, it was unpredictable to me, who is not familar with the Oriental culture. I assumed that it would be more predictable to other people, esp people with in that culture.

I've always been interested in the culture, just never had the opprotunity to study it or the time to go out of my way to find information on it.

But nevertheless, these movies are very different from the average "Western" movie to which I am accustomed. So in my mind, they don't seem to fit the "normal" progression of the plot. I hope it doesn't make me sound like I don't appreciate the artistry or the culture of these movies! I do! I'm just not familar with the culture yet.

Annûniel, I understand what you're getting at. It is very true that "foreign" movies are much different from the typical "hollywood-esque" movie.

It bothers me, though, when people watch an artistic martial arts movie and say it's "stupid" because they don't understand the plot or style of the movie. And to add to that when people don't like the movie because it's "unrealistic" because the characters can fly...okay, getting off-topic though.

I agree. At some parts, I soooo did not think that they would happen. But then, after watching the film again, I was like "duh!"

I've always been interested in the culture, just never had the opprotunity to study it or the time to go out of my way to find information on it.

I LOVE Asia! Next year I'm taking a traditional China class. I'm SO excited. And I also have the most adorable Chinese baby doll. *has pictures* Ooops! Am getting off subject...

I believe it was released in December last year but not many people knew when or if it was going to be in theatres or not.

Dagnabit! I never heard anything about it. Man! I wish I knew because this would have been a fun movie to see on a big screen.

I have seen "House of Flying Daggers". I loved the colours in that movie but didn't think it as great as "Hero", which I really liked a lot.

What I liked about "House of Flying Daggers" was that the film slowly showed that no one was what they seem to be and that everybody was deceiving everyone else.
I thought the winter scene at the end was a little OTT, very nicely done but OTT. It made it look like as if they had been fighting from Autumn to Winter non-stop. LOL
