One of my friends uses the word navaer, which she says is the sindarin word for farewell. But someone on a different forum said that navaer was not right and was just made up. Did he mean that it is a word that elvish scholars have introduced using sources from Tolkien but it wasn't actually used by him or is it just wrong? Or maybe, it is right?

Yep. If I recall correctly, R. Derdzinski reconstructed it based on the Quenya namárië (which is a word by Tolkien). However, I think a lot of us just use it out of convenience.

And I had saw a new cognation _*novaer_(cf. Q na + márië), which is a more applausable one for me
