A quick check of my endings and word choice if anyone has time......

Suilad. Pedich edhellen. Greetings! I am speaking Elvish.
Mae tollen na adar, naneth, an istonor. Welcome to fathers, mothers, and teachers
Le hannon a tholel. Thank you for coming.


Glassen a chened ion iell lín, aphador nin, It is my joy to see your son or daughter, my students,
arth- an bronwe ned hennas i parf a teitho. honored for their achievement in reading and writing ( HELP I need a gerund form of teitho here)

Aníron peded tolo eneth lín Please come forward as I speak your name.

Mae carnen! ..... Well done!
Na i veth. Aduial vaer. I am at the end. Good evening.

I used bronwe (endurance) for achievement unless someone has a better idea.

(Pedich would be you are speaking)

Mae tollen na adar, naneth, an istonor. Welcome to fathers, mothers, and teachers

Why not use the attested, 'mae govannen'?

>Mae govannen 'nin odhronath a istonorath.
Lit: Well met to the parents and teachers.

Since you're speaking to 'all' the fathers and mothers and teachers, I'd use the collective plurals.

('istonor' is NS... as is 'le hannon' )

I hate to say I was playing with the speech and I realized in reading your reply I copied and pasted a draft before I did some of the person endings and mutations. I made you work harder than needed but thanks a thousand times for your help!

I can't quite come to terms with perf becoming berf (doesn't sound right...)

Now I need to play with it a bit and work on the pronounciation. (I need to pull up "Mellyn in Edhil" to listen and review Lesson One.)

...and see if I can drum up enough courage to actually use it Awards Night.

The French and German teachers always ramble away in their respective languages so.....:evil: we'll see.

I think egleria-, 'to praise, to honour', would also work here -- egleriennin am mronwe... etc. Also, Gwendeth, I'm curious here as to why you lenited heniad after vi?

Ach! Typo on 'henaid'. :blush:

'berf' is lenited as the Direct Object if I was thinking correctly. :twitch:

I would personally leave out le hannon in your speech, since it has been shown that it is not correct Sindarin. Much of the movie *Sindarin is not Tolkienian, and I would avoid terms that we know to be erroneous.

The following is found in the Ardalambion article Sindarin: The Noble Tongue:

"Unlike the active participles (we think), the past or passive participle has a distinct plural form (used when the participle describes a plural word). This is formed by altering the ending -nnen to -nnin, combined with I-umlaut throughout the word. As usual, the effect of this is that the vowels a and o, where they occur, are altered to e."

That being the case, wouldn't we use mae gevennin when addressing more than one person, such as a group of parents?

I'd think so - thanks for catching that... and I agree about 'le hannon'. I've stopped using it, myself. *sigh* maybe some future Vinyar Tengwar will give us something to use...

Any ideas for a 'substitute'?
