Ok, I was feeling rather 'impish' this morning:evil:, so I did this small translation. I do believe it 'works' with the original melody and timing fairly well...

Enjoy!

The itsy, bitsy spider, went up the water spout,
I thlingril laes dithen, ambant* i nên-hauthad**,
The spider baby little, up-went the water-drain,

Down came the rain, and washed the spider out!
I ross dannant, ah ed-uwathant*** i thlingril!
The rain fell, and out forth-washed the spider!

Out came the sun, and dried up all the rain,
Ethill i anor, ah i ross bân pell,
Out forth-shone the sun, and the rain all withered,

And the itsy, bitsy spider, went up the spout again!
Ah i thlingril laes dithen, ambant i hauthad ad!
And the spider baby little, up-went the drain again!

* am (up) + bad- (go) ~ past tense
** from 'sautha-' (to drain). Not the 'best' option, perhaps, but couldn't think of anything better
*** uwatha- (to wash) - Neo-Sindarin

edit: ed+sila- = e-sill (past tense) [?]
(Comment/corrections please!! )

Just two questions:

Furthermore, wouldn't _ed_ trigger stop mutation?

Gwendeth, I'm not sure anymore whether stop mutation would be appropriate here.
It seems that _ed_ isn't used as a prepostion in this case, but as a prefix.
The only example of a word consisting of _ed_ + a word with the initial consonant _s_ is _ethir 1_ (_ed_+_sîr_).

_?*ethill_ (pa.t. of _?*ethíla-_) ??

Hi Gwendeth! (Sorry for any delay -- I've been suffering from the student's bane, i.e. due assignments ) Anyway, I think Ailinel's suggestion is plausible. I probably don't have a better one, and the only word which could (arguably) support the case for stop mutation* occuring here would be ephel.

* (I think. Apologies if I'm incorrect.)

Also, shouldn't __bent be __bant?

lol and yep - 'bent' should be 'bant'. *sigh* typos... bad fingers, bad fingers...
