Post UT Illustrated - Of Tuor and His Coming to Gondolin

Well. For some cruel and unfortunate reason, you get me to do the pictures for this book

So ... Tuor and his journey to Gondolin - a bit of the book that is remarkably well documented in art. Everyone likes angsty Tuor, gorgeous Voronwë and hidden cities surrounded by Encircling Mountains. And swans. Everyone likes painting swans.

Enjoy!

We start with Vinyamar. (And gorgeous Voronwë).

Tuor is led by the swans to Vinyamar (Ted Nasmith):

Tuor sees Voronwë (Anke Eissmann):

This isn't *strictly* necessary, but its soooo pretty - Voronwë in Nan-tathren (Anke Eissmann):

And then we have Ulmo appearing:

Ulmo appears to Tuor (John Howe):

The path to Gondolin:

And then Gondolin itself ...

I adore the first one, by Nasmith. It's got that dramatic feel of a tragedy being at hand and a destiny being fulfilled. That painting fueled my interest for Tuor, too.

Atalante, the one by Ted Nasmith that you've named "Gates of Gondolin", is actually of Gelmir and Arminas leading Tuor through Annon-in-Gelydh, the Gate of the Noldor in Dor-lómin.

I've always seen it labelled as Gondolin! Well, you learn something new every day! It still looks like Gondolin though

I really love the pictures, especially by Anke Eissmen, but didn't Tuor have blonde hair?

Yes, he did, and he has in all those pictures, except that in Howe's "Ulmo appears" it looks dark. If the man in Nasmith's "Gondolin" is Tuor, he stands so in the shadow that he isn't even seen properly.

I found it easier to imagine Tuor with dark hair too... Maybe it's because he's a darker character, being 'doomed' and all. Maybe also, we associate blonde hair with Elves, not with Men?

Well, we don't really associate all blonde people with Elves. The House of Hador all had blonde hair, and I find it quite easy to imagine Tuor with a golden head and joyful laugh.
