Post UT illustrated - Narn i hîn Húrin (part 2)

For the first part of this second section, again there are not many illustrations. Notably, there's an absence of pictures of the scene of Túrin in Brodda's hall - which I think would make a wonderful series of illustrations! There is also little of Morwen and Nienor during these early scenes and at Nargothrond, though I have found one of Morwen that I think shows something of her character (art by Filat):

We then have a *lot* of pictures of Nienor / Niniel. If I was cynical, I'd say it was because most Tolkien illustrators are men and most men like drawing naked women LOL.

Níniel (art by Nasmith and Eissmann):

And after naked women comes a dragon - also a favourite to depict!

Glaurung (Garland):

Glaurung and Níniel (art by Howe and Edelfeldt):

Túrin and Glaurung (art by Nasmith, Sjögren, and Guy Gondron):

The End (art by Nasmith, Howe and Price):

Here's another good one by Howe:

It's actually my favourite from the whole Narn i Hin Hurin: maybe because it's so sublime, maybe because of it's incredible atmosphere or maybe because it presents the one positive thing that turned out of the whole story: the death of that blasted Glaurung.

There's a lot of pics of the death of Glaurung - I just chose the few I really liked ...

I know, but I just thought this one is particularly dramatic.

That one of Nienor's death by Nasmith... I can't decide if I like it or not. It seems to express all her grace and beauty, but none of the torment she's going through. It looks like she's diving into a clear pool... I think I like it, but not for what it is!

I have to say the one I really like out of that set is Inger Edelfeldt's Glaurung - he feels so *slimy* and creepy and dark ...

Wow, the art work is something. I don't like the pictures of the dragon though. He looks more like a comodo dragon then a dragon.

But the pictures of Nieniol and Turin of lovely. I like the last one.
