Absolute Power Corrupts

From the notes at the end of the chapter; we find that Sauron and Saruman actually had much in common.

'At the beginning of the Second Age he (Sauron) was still beautiful to look at, or could still assume a beautiful visible shape - and was not indeed wholly evil, not unless all 'reformers' who want to hurry up 'reconstruction' and 'reorganization' are wholly evil, even before pride and the lust to exert their will eat them up.

Do you think that Sauron started out wanting only to rebuild Middle-earth after the detruction of Beleriand, and only became wholly evil after he began to acquire power?

Sauron wanted Middle-earth for himself, but through the Eleves of Eregion, he had some hope of converting some of the Eldar to his cause.

A question that remains is how was Galadriel able to see through Sauron's guise and reject him, as she also did with her uncle Feanor.
Were the metalsmiths of Eregion so blinded by their eagerness to learn from Sauron that they ignored his shadow? Or was Galadriel simply beter than most at seing through a facade?

It could be both. Galadriel is described as quite a judge of charcter; and, remember that, Gil-galad and Elrond also mistrusted Sauron without knowing who he really was, so that he never had any influence in Lindon. On the other hand, the Gwaith-i-Mírdain were a sort of technocrats of their day, blinded by what "Annatar" was able to learn to them.
