From the Lord of the Rings books or all of what Tolkien wrote?
If you're including all his works I really like the Mewlips.
If it's just from LotR Sam's troll rhyme always makes me smile.

It's tough to choose just one because I'm a big poetry lover, but I really like Kotirion Among The Trees from the Book of Lost Tales.
"To the Hobbits. May they outlast the Sarumans and see spring again in the trees." J.R.R. Tolkien

'All that is gold does not glitter' and 'Far over the misty mountains cold'. But I also like 'The road goes ever on'.

One of my faves is Errantry. Wonderful rhythm, like an old train.

One of my favorite Tolkien poems is from The Hobbit:

Sing all ye joyful, now sing all together!
The wind’s in the tree-top, the wind's in the heather;
The stars are in blossom, the moon is in flower,
And bright are the windows of Night in her tower.

Dance all ye joyful, now dance all together!
Soft is the grass, and let foot be like feather!
The river is silver, the shadows are fleeting;
Merry is May-time, and merry our meeting.

Sing we now softly, and dreams let us weave him!
Wind him in slumber and there let us leave him!
The wanderer sleepeth. Now soft be his pillow!

Lullaby! Lullaby! Alder and Willow!
Sigh no more Pine, till the wind of the morn!
Fall Moon! Dark be the land!
Hush! Hush! Oak, Ash, and Thorn!
Hushed be all water, till dawn is at hand!

And there's one from me that I like today called "Earth, Mother":

No matter how much we take her apart,
And hustle her off,
She comes back . . . together.
No matter how enamoured of ourselves we become,
She waits outside, patient, motherly—
Out of sight, all around us, though very still,
Nocturnal at her best.
To the Everything she is
We have set great Nothingness opposite her,
And it has become our madhouse, prison.

. . . nature always makes the best subject for poems.

Is this the poem dwellerofthewest if so it is called Boromir’s Riddle

Seek for the Sword that was broken:
In Imladris it dwells;
There shall be counsels taken
Stronger than Morgul-spells.
There shall be shown a token
That Doom is near at hand,
For Isildur’s Bane shall waken,
And the Halfling forth shall stand.

Tolkien's poems have such a ring to them! 'Isildur's Bane shall waken, and the Halfling forth shall stand...' Errantry is picturesque, isn't it? I liked Earth, Mother - I thought it was very descriptive of the world as it is today, especially the last three lines.

Another Tolkien poem I like is 'One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them...', especially in translation ('ash nazg durbatuluk...'), simply because it sounds so impressive!

I like "The Song of Beren and Luthien". I also like "All that is gold does not glitter" but my favourite is "Far over the Misty Mountains Cold". I shall never love another poem as much as that. Lord_Sauron, what is your favourite?

For many years I considered the songs and verses to be something that I needed to skip over to get on with the story. That may have been caused by my hatred of the way poems were dissected and over-analyzed back in my high school English classes. That changed when I joined the staff here and felt that I needed a better understanding of all things Tolkien. That said, I`m reading the posts in this thread with interest as I still don`t have a favorite verse.

I, too, skipped over the songs and verses when I started reading the books. I read them now and enjoy them so much. They are so much a part of the story and must not be missed. Sometimes I will just go through the books to find them and read them again. I hope you find a favourite and will share it with us.

I like Treebeard's song ("In the willow meads of Tasarinan") best. Close behind is the one about Durin ("He stooped and looked in Mirrormere and saw a crown of stars appear"); that one has such a lovely rhythm to it.

Boromir's lament in the two towers, because I learnt it and it goes really nicely to music. And it's sung by aragorn and legolas. (Through Rohan over fen and field where the long grass grows)

And the walking song the hobbits sing when they're walking to crick hollow in the fellowship of the ring. It is actually great to walk to... (Upon the hearth the fire is red)

Though those are just two of my favourite ones - the only ones I could think of right now!

I would agree with both of those, especially the lament for Boromir. I am also fond of the dwarves song "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold". Although it has been given a new tune for the movie, I have always thought of it to the tune of "Banks of Green Willow" used by the English folk-singer Martin Carthy. It is in an unusual 'mode', a little strange to the modern ear but lends great atmosphere.

I love most of Tolkien's poems but my favourites would be the riddle of strider (all that is gold does not glitter), the contest of Sauron and Felagund and the lay of leithian- particularly when any battles are described.

I'm not too far into the books so my opinion might change later but of the poems that I have read so far, my favorite would have to be the one included in Gandalf's letter to Frodo in FOTR.

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Not only because it is a pretty poem or because of what it foreshadows, but if you put aside what the poem is referring to and think of it as just a poem and not part of LOTR for a moment there is much to learn:
Not all that is valuable has a price, wander the world and see its beauties, try to stay strong and just live life. Don't let others get to you, sorrow does not last forever, renewed you shall be.

I like Sam's song from Mordor.

In Western lands beneath the sun
The flowers may rise in spring
The trees may bud, the waters run
The merry finches sing
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
And swaying beeches bear
The Elven stars as jewels white
Amid their branching hair

Though here at journey's end I lie
In darkness buried deep
Beyond all towers strong and high
Beyond all mountains steep
Above all darkness rides the sun
And stars forever dwell
I will not say the day is done
Nor bid the stars farewell.

I'm not sure why I like it so much. Maybe it's because the imagery was beautiful. I even wrote music for it.

I'm totally in love with Frodo/Bilbo's song about the merry old inn. It became my favorite when I read it for the first time.

I like the tom bombadill's and the 'crownless again shall be king
I miss you. I miss you both. I miss you every week, ever day, every hour, every minute. Every second I shatter once more under the weight I have to carry. My heart bleeds afresh from this old wound.

I think my favorite poem would be that of the Song of Beren and Lúthien, because that is my favorite love story of all time. Other than, however, I like the All That Is Gold Does Not Glitter poem, BUT I find I like the older version much better which goes as follows with a few differences from the official one used.

All that is gold does not glitter;
all that is long does not last;
All that is old does not wither;
not all that is over is past.

Not all that have fallen are vanquished;
a king may yet be without crown,
A blade that was broken be brandished;
and towers that were strong may fall down.

The Song of the Lonely Mountain is my favorite. It reminds me of Norse folk songs and would sound amazing if Blind Guardian, Isengard or Hithlum did a cover.
