annon allen ("thank you") on: April 25, 2023 08:48
Hi, folks! I'm sorry if someone already brought this issue before. But I have seen some poeple say in social media that annon allen (rather than hannon le or le hannon) is the more accurate option for "thank you" in Sindarin, with recent publications on the language. Is this correct?
As far as I know, le is attested as "to thee". So, it seems that hannon le (or le hannon ) is correct, if the Sindarin verb "to thank" is hanna- (and if it is indirect transitive, as Quenya hanta- "to give thanks" appears to be, since this verb is isolated from hantalë "thanksgiving" ), with allen (obviously an "to", "for" + theorizied acusative len "thou" ) being an unnecessary Neo-Sindarin for "to thee".
Regarding *anna-* as the verb "to thank", it also looks like Neo-Sindarin for "to give" (annon allen suggesting it is indirect transitive), and it is maybe best avoided due to possible confusion with anna- "to give" ).
