I understand from other sources that Tolkien achieved a Master’s degree but other than an Honorary Doctorate from Oxford late in his life that was the extent of his degrees. Obviously it didn’t prevent him from becoming a professor but was there a particular reason he didn’t pursuit a doctorate? Was it Oxford’s policy that a higher degree wasn’t needed to advance to a full professorship? As a heathen American it’s puzzling advancing as Tolkien did without a PhD. Or wasn’t that considered necessary during Tolkien’s time?
