Post Lectures on Tolkien and his Writings
on: February 01, 2024 10:43
There is plenty of information online about Tolkien but if you're interested in the academic studies of his works these lectures and discussions may be of interest.

Tom Shippey is well known as a leading authority on Tolkien and his contributions to language and literature studies:

Here he discusses the path taken by Jackson to produce the LOTR movies
The Swarthmore lecture

A short talk at Upsala Books
"Sixty Years of Tolkien": A Lecture by Tom Shippey

Oxford University has dozens of lectures and talks online about Tolkien. The Bodleian Library had an exhibition of his illustrations in 2018 with talks about Tolkien's language influences. Search the main site for 'Tolkien' or scroll through the list of 'BODcasts'.
The Bodleian Libraries (BODcasts)

Another one by Tom Shippey from 2018 to get you started
Tolkien's turning point: Tolkien and the history of tongues

Here's a discussion from 2015 about the influence that Tolkien's writings have had
The Lord of the Rings: Tolkien's Legacy

Although Oxford University attracts the brightest and best their technical know-how is not so good. The sound quality on some of these is less than professional but still worth a go.
