b/c he told them to leave, and they were about to get attacked by orcs
and also, the whip was still around his ankle in the book, so they couldn’t change that whole thing
yeah, and the bridge was ruined, when he said ‘Fly you fools’ he’s already falling

because gandalf wanted to ‘die’ with dignity & kick that balrog’s butt!
also the fellowship prolly would have died in the process of saving him
