Whew! Technique? First, patience and a lot of time. Then insanity for spending so long on it!
Hints: I used charcoal pencil instead of blunt charcoal. Oh, and the kneaded eraser is your friend!

copy this image, find this picture of Gandalf, and overlay them. I bet they aren’t the same.
It’s obviously an original drawing. I’ve said so already, but I’ll say it again: this is amazing!
