Well yes, I love it too but I have no clue what this is.
OOooo… absoutely gorgeous, you can feel the spray of the sea and hear the surf. I love it….
Wow. Only Howe…how does he do it? Wild guess, this is from the Silmarillion–elves leaving Valinor?
Based on Howe’s gallery, this is ‘The Ship of the Dark’,from ‘The Peoples of Middle-Earth’ edited by C.Tolkien
*breathes the salty sea* i love it!!
Ironically I’m listening to a re4cording of the sea at the moment!!! I love the waves in action and watching
the ships go by. Perhaps this is around the Grey Havens but maybe its the Corsair ships that are carrying the
evil servants for Mordor. ARAGORN. LEGOLAS. GIMLI. ATTACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What black ship? They’re all white. Am I missing something?
the black ship is small and slightly to the left of the midde…
wow, nebver heard of it aprt from the black ships of the corsairs in rotk, but this isnt it.
That place looks positively Freezing!!! very beautiful but where’s the black ship?
What is the black ship? *looking in my magical unfinished tales index* hmm nowhere to be seen
i guess i’ll agree with slayer since he got edoras and rivendell right, go slayer, go slayer
the black ship is small, and slightly left of the center.
this is GREAT!!! I love the drawings of John Howe and Alan Lee!!!
i think its the faithful leaving numenor
I believe this is an illustration of a story found in The Peoples of Middle Earth (HOME XII). It is one of…
…Tolkien’s late unfinished tales which is unrelated to his other works. As I remember, the story implied…
…that these are Numenoreans coming to settle in Middle Earth. The unfinished story is called Tal-Elmar.
Does this remind anyone else of that scene in “Princess Bride”, when they see the ‘black ship’ following them?
Looks more like how I pictured the Gray Haven’s ship, all glowy and everything. Nice pic, though.
Should be the faithful making landfall in Mmidle Earth, felling the ruin of Numenor. Now, guess who’s aboard t
Haha! It does remind me of Princess Bride!
The water is simply amazing, and the way the light is reflected off the ships is very cool.
Where’s the bloddy black ship anyway?!…bah!…love jonh howe
-stares- Wha?? Where?!
wow, ilove this
it’s a beautiful painting, but I think the black ship might actually be a white ship overshadowed by the cloud
It’s beautiful…
*Cries from joy*
LOL Elven Maiden and Voron! “I wonder if he is using the same wind we are using?”
I dont know the precise setting; but its very tolkien
Could this be the arrival of the ships to middle earth after the fall of Numenor?
It is a beautiful depiction of the power and beauty of the ocean with a contrast of light and darkness.
