I read somewhere that the translation of Gimli’s insult to Haldir means, “I spit on your grave.” Aragorn was not happy when Gimli spoke to Haldir. To me, spitting on your grave is more insulting than a plague on the stiff necks of Elves. If I ever find out where I got this translation, I will let you know.
