Ingredients

2 pkgs. dry yeast
2 cups milk
½ cup shortening
1 tsp. salt
¾ cup sugar
2 eggs
7 cups flour
¼ cup warm water
Butter, melted
Cherry, poppy seed, apricot, or prune filling


Instructions

Oven: 350 degrees F.

Soak yeast in warm water.

Scald milk. Add shortening, salt, and sugar to the milk. Cool until lukewarm.

Drop in eggs and beat. In separate bowl, mix 2 cups flour and yeast. Add to milk mixture.

Slowly add 5 more cups flour and work into the dough. Knead until smooth and stiff. Put it greased bowl and cover with greased plastic and a towel.

Place bowl in a warm area. Let rise until doubled in size; punch down. Let rise another 30 minutes.

Roll out dough.about ½ inch thick. Cut shapes using a drinking glass or square- shaped cutter. Place in greased pan, leaving space between for rising.

Spread a small amount of melted butter on the dough. Let rise another 15 minutes.

Make a shallow hole in the middle of each shape. Fill with the filling of your choice.

Bake 10-15 min. or until golden brown.
