Athele was born on her family’s farm, a mile outside Esgaroth. She lived a simple life with her father and mother, Daroth and Dora.
From early childhood her father taught her to respect nature but to love it also, and so from the time she was five she and her father kept a beautiful garden with fruits, vegetables, flowers and small trees.

When Athele was nine, her older cousin Devin came to live with them (since his father wa killed in a fire), and they were like brother and sister from then on. But Athele’s happy life soon vanished one dry summer night when lightning struck their barn. Daroth was killed while trying to rescue the animals. Athele was burned on her leg and remained forever scarred in mind and body. She feared fire from then on. Some said it was ironic that both Devin and Athele’s fathers were killed in fires .

Athele grew up into a women but would always remember the things her father taught her. She diligently tended her garden, even when a strange blight destroyed it and all the neighboring crops. And even after Athele and her family move into the city to live with Dora’s father, she would continue caring for her garden, or one like it. She also makes her daily rounds to all the outlying farms to bring food to those who cannot travel into the city every day for their share.
