Falkan’s father was a sailor from Umbar. He met Falkan’s mother when his ship had to stop in Gondor and they were married and moved to Umbar. Falkan’s mother died in childbirth with Falkan’s sister who was eight years younger than himself. His sister was taken in by the mother’s brother and sister-in-law who strongly disapproved of Falkan’s mother’s choice of husband. Because of this, they took the child to Minas Tirith in order to sever ties with Falkan’s father and brought up the baby as their own. Falkan’s father became incredibly depressed at the death of his wife and loss of his daughter that he took to drinking. He’d come home every night drunk and in a very violent temper. Falkan got a beating from him about every week. (Until Falkan found places to hide until he was sober.) Despite his trouble at home, however, Falkan was happy because he would go down to the docks every day and soon knew almost all there was to know about sailing and ships, as well as fighting. Then men at the docks all liked Falkan because of his eagerness to learn. When he was sixteen, Falkan finally ran away from home and sailed to the southern part of Gondor in a little beat-up skiff he had bought. He wanted to make contact with his mother’s family as well as his sister, but most of them could have cared less about him because he reminded them of his father (who all of them despised) and (what they considered) the disgraceful conduct of his mother in marrying a man from Umbar. Falkan became very bitter-which he still is-at most people in general and found employment on a ship. He had various jobs working on different ships, but he isn’t very well liked because of his sarcastic, rather rude attitude. He started drinking and now he’s lost some of the great skills he used to have. He gets kicked out of towns rather frequently because of his tendancy to start fights in taverns.
