Edwin Neave was a lodger in the Suffield house in King’s Heath, where he met his future wife, Emily Jane Suffield, Mabel’s sister and Tolkien’s aunt. He was sandy-haired, and played the banjo in the house, singing music hall songs.

By 1904, he lived in Hove, was married to Jane, and worked as an insurance clerk. He died in 1911.
