He was with a company of elves that had been singing and scared away one of the Black Riders that was about to find Frodo, Sam and Pippin on their way to meet Merry in Buckland.

Gildor and his company fed the hobbits, and then left them extra food for the next day. He sent messages to Tom Bombadil and Aragorn concerning the hobbits. He also sent a message to Elrond, who in turn sent out riders, including Glorfindel of Rivendell.
